Finished this up yesterday afternoon. It's 6'1" long and weighs 4.5 lbs by my bathroom scale. Curly maple with a 5160 point. Copper ferrule and brass pommel(?) I guess thats what you'd call it on a spear. Added a rawhide wrap with horse hair and some tin cones. I may do some tacks, haven't made my mind up yet. I'm just itchin to throw it into the door of my old truck but I dont want to beat it up too bad yet.And yes, I'm that ugly. Hope you like it.

Damn Mark, you look like something that just crawled out of the jungle, you come at me with that thing and there would be a heck of a stink, if you get my meaning. :D

Cool Looking Piece.

Oh. OK. Nevermind... :)

Just kidding. Anyway, let me say I like it. I really do - looks like it would be a lot of fun to let fly. Or is this more of a lance?

So, how did you attach it to the shaft? Does the head have a socket? Friction fit? Pinned? Thanks

Looks like a heck of a hog sticker to me! Nice work, Mark! You could run that through a pretty big hog. I'll watch from the tree! Another thing, do you plan on using it on a hog? In Kern County, Calif. I knew a guy that used something like that for actually killing wild hogs from a tree. Robbie would wait in ambush over some trails and spear straight down on the hogs, killing them. He is a good guy, kinda "out there",lives in Bakersfield. My brother, his now ex-brother in law, told me Robbie actually used to JUMP out of the tree with the spear, onto the hog, driving the spear clear through the hog and into the ground. No thanks. if you ever met Robbie, there would be NO doubt as to his prowless with the spear.

Dang, Mark that poker is pretty slick! Reminds me of this story I read in a hunting magazine a few years back where this feller in Arkansas made himself a spear and went hunting with it. He climbed into a tree and jumped onto a deer, spearing it in the neck. Pretty cool, actually. Maybe they should have a "primitive weapons" season?

Some interesting reading about hog hunting with a spear here: (link) - some enlightening comments by Dr. H as well...

How about a 10 Ga. bangstick for a backup, like one of those shark bangsticks? If no stopper on the shaft, might get pretty exciting really quick, I'd think! Are you a good climber, by the way? That is one fine looking piece of work, and looks like it would dispatch a hog pretty quick. I have seen a lot of hogs stuck at the packing house I worked at, and it takes time for a hog to actually die after being stuck. they were stuck in the jugular,by the way. Your spear would make a much larger wound and bleed the hog quite profusely, I would think!

Thanks for the link to the articles Wulf. I think I'll forge a friction fit "Toggle" for the spear. Might as well make a little holder in the sheath for it.

The head is forged down to a tang about 8" long. I concaved the area where it transitions from the 1" bar to the tang. The convexed wood shaft fits up into that so the forces wont push outward on the wood. the bottom of the tang has a concave grind on the tip to spread the force towards the center of the shaft. I'm going to pin the tang also. The tang socket has a bit of JB weld in there just to be on the safe side. It's kind of silly though because If I were going to actually kill a PO'd hog with a stick, it would'nt be curly Maple. This was just for fun. It is a serious weapon though. The balance is right behind the swell.

Gouge,

Wow! Another amazing piece of work. I cant wait to see what's next.

(Pigs in the Dismal Swamp ought to tremble!)

Mark, don't you need to get that racoon that's wrapped around your face and neck first?!?!?!?! :p :D :p

Just josh'n ya Mark, that's a really cool piece. I hadn't even thought of making one like that until I saw yours. I can imagine you've just got to be itching to throw it at something...but are you really that mad at your old truck? ;)

I'd be curious how far a guy could throw one of those?

I watched the Cold Steel Proof videa and saw either Lynn Thompson or one of his cohorts chuck a spear, pretty awesome !!

Hey, isn't that stereo system out of place with that collection of mantlepiece gear ? !!! ;) :D :D

But hey, with all the cool "primitive" gear you showed, that spear is what every bona fide mountain man needs !! :D Jason.

Mark, this is a bonafied invitation to a real life no joke south Texas hog hunt. If you ever get down to the lone star state you bring that spear(or any cutting tool of your choice ) and well give a sure fire combat test! this invitation is Good as long as it takes for you to get here!

btw, nice piece..
