here's an idea for being prepared... NO GADGETS!

Doesn't make sense to me at all, Midget.

Just because I own an MP3 player, phone, bed...doesn't mean that I'd try to cram it into my car when I need get the hell out of Dodge. Yes, I would take my entire knife collection, a bunch of books and few other cool things, but they wouldn't take up much space at all. I'd still have plenty of space left to take clothes, food etc with me.

eh. to each his own.

i probably shouldn't have started this thread mentioning the hurricanes. i've actually been selling off all my stuff on ebay for several months now. this isn't really about fleeing anywhere, it's more about my philosophy and lifestyle, and so far it's treating me well.

on a side note, i went to a used clothing store today and upon my arrival, immediately kicked myself for all those years i've bought new clothes retail.

you'll be surprised what you might find. lots of servicable clothes for nearly nothing. i don't understand why in american culture used clothing is such a faux pas.

one thing i know is i'll never buy new clothes again. *maybe* new underwear, that is, if i start wearing underwear. :D socks and t-shirts don't count cause they are cheap anyway.

i have to confess though. i bought a strider SLCC the other day. i'm a horrible person.

Your point is taken about simplifying one's life

I have a friend who, when we were younger, considered material possessions a hindrance. He would have an apartment. A bare apartment. This all but empty apartment was furnished a al Early Army Surplus. It worked for him.

I, on the other hand, enjoy my material goods. We got along then and we get along now, although we see each other far less often because we happen to live far away from each other.

"i've been getting rid of pretty much everything unessential to my everyday lifestyle"

Midget,
So how is this life style working out for you? I like the more is less ways.

I had this mindset when I first got married. All our stuff fit into one small trailer, and everything was very basic and utilitarian. The years piled up and so did the kids. We have tons of crap now.

With any luck, we'll be moving soon, and will be able to do a massive purge. We've been talking about cutting way back for some time now.

I think it's a great experiment for you. Hell, Thoreau did it, wrote about it, and became famous.

haha, it's working out ok, i guess. i still have a lot of stuff that i haven't managed to get rid of, but for the most part, i'm living quite well on the lightweight.

i sleep with a poncho liner and a blanket now, cause my apartment has such poor heating and MI isn't getting any warmer.

otherwise, been doing good. i'm not really saving any money (which sucks cause that was partially the point of going minimalist in the first place), and when i look at my bills it seems i'm spending most of my money on food (too much eating out, too much beer).

so all in all, i'm enjoying it. bear in mind, i'm not at all near to as minimalist as i want to be. i still have two bikes, three or four backpacks/messenger bags, lots of various bike parts, a few extra knives, etc etc. basically, just stuff i'm not getting any use out of but couldn't manage to get rid of. also tools-- but i can't bear to part with any of my babies. ;)

on a side note...
about two weeks i was robbed. guess someone thought i wasn't living light enough. they relieved me of a bottle of whiskey, my flask, and my oaklies. :(
