My favorite production knife is this Benchmade 635 mini-skirmish modified by Tom Krein.
It packs a lot of blade in the relatively small handle. It carries very well. It's only 3.6oz(100grams).It's 4.25"(109mm) closed & 7.75"(195mm) open. It's an S30V blade, with Ti handles & phosphor bronze washers. It glides open so smoothly & locks up tight with no play in any direction.
I had Tom grind out the recurve just because it would make it easier to maintain for me.I haven't quite worked out the recurve sharpening learning curve just yet.He also did a full flat grind on it into a high hollow secondary(I think that's what he said).Since he did the regrind,I haven't had to touch the blade against a single stone. All I've had to do was use a plain leather strop(courtesy of mr2blue),at the end of each day it was used.To say Tom Krein has a gift with the grinder is an extreme understatement.
The pictures show the blade in pretty clean condition, but I assure you it has been used quite a bit.I just clean & polish it afterwards(pretty anal about it:o:D).
I use leather chamois',various scotchbrite pads, mild abrasives & oils to maintain all my folders.
I experimented on this one by using some 400-600 grit wet/dry sandpaper & a scotchbrite pad to give it a worn look.It feels better in my hand this way too.I think it came out OK,not as good as some others I have seen on this forum, but it was my first mod.
When these were in production, they went for around $125. IIRC.(now I've seen them selling for closer to $300)
I wish I picked up a few of them back then.:o:grumpy:
I love my Spyderco's,Kershaw's & Bucks et al,but this Benchmade 635 is hands down my favorite production knife, with or without the recurve.
:thumbup:On with the pictures...

This Camillus Dominator is still my favorite production knife, it was the first knife I bought that cost over $140. I kept putting off buying one for months until I saw a dealer selling these tanto version at a reduced price. Not too long after, Camillus closed.

It's a titanium frame lock with a very high quality assisted opening mechanism.
The build quality is equal or better than knives costing more than twice it's original purchase price.

I'm not a big fan of tanto points, but for some reason it just looks great on this knife.

Lately I'm torn. I love my Cyclone and I've used it for just about every task under the sun...

...But I also love my Manix 2.

Decisions, decisions.

Love Benchmade stuff, but can this still technically be called a production knife after Mr. Krein's mods?

My new Lionsteel SR1 I just picked up today from the mailman- but before it was usually a spyderco manix II - and I still love that blade to death. Maybe the finest blade it its class for the dollar. Sorry no pics either.

Sure, why not? It's the same knife, just slightly modified.I'd like it without the mods too.

Currently, but subject to change(I tend to switch off from one to another after a while), is the Spyderco Chinook 3.

View attachment 214169 mine is this Boker Leo IV, #244/250, it is handforged of 4 steels, 600 layers, corm of rosewood handle, 600 layer inlays, tapered tang, 3/16 thick, 925 SS guard and pins. This is one of my nicer knives that i carry on occasion. By far this is my favorite production knife. it was hard to get and not cheap, but i will never get rid of it. Absolutley some of the finest damascus i own. Wade @ Maddison Saddlery in Jeffers, MT is responsible for the sheath for which he used Muir & McDonald leather. It is not available anymore and was the finest leather made in Wades opinion.

Ah, JTR357, your's is but a BM 635 mini-Skirmish! I still like the 630 Skirmish better - my 635BK resides in a knife stand most of the time. Of course, that is why we have so many choices... mine are several, too - see below:

I should add my ZT-0551 to the mix. Little matter - I have two 630 Skirmish's - it's my favorite - even if it is a pocketful!

Stainz

PS I'd probably miss the recurve... and Krein isn't doing that work anymore.

 My question is a simple one,

...in a thread about "Favorite Production Knives" the OP shows us a Modified knife,

...does that knife still qualify as a production knife?

All of my favorite knives are either customs or modified knives. ;)

My fave is probably the Case/Bose lockback whittler collaboration. This is an extremely difficult and complex pattern to do well (the two small slipjoint blade springs also power the main lockbar) and they nailed it.
