it is a small winged esbit stove.. similar to the legs on an MSR whisperlite.. this thing rocks.... i actually have a few.... they were a great deal, i just couldn't pass it up... there is also a titanium version...

i got it from www.backpackinglight.com

fonly--- it is a doans magnesium block.... i have used one of these things just about my whole life... my dad loved them.... he carried one through-out his 24 years in the army....i've never used the cohglan's version..

mike

ok, well the cohglan's is a spitting image of the doans, but as long as they work rite :)

fire is fire amigo....:D

i love these things.... my son get's a kick out of them too...

I think that my magnesium block is a Cohglans - I've had good luck with it. Is that a chunk of hacksaw blade you've got attached to yours in the picture? I've always just used the back of my knife - but I can definately see that blade as working better!

diceman-- it is a hacksaw blade,, they throw a mean spark from a firesteel....

Hey Mike...

A Doan Tool is a Doan Tool, no matter who's name is on it, Coleman, Cohglans or what have you...

It's made by Doan Manufacturering in Ohio...

If it looks like that ,, it is in fact made by Doan..Doan makes them for every major military in the world or at least Nato countries, as well custom stamps them with other logos.

I've spoken with the owner on several occasions, heck of a nice guy...

He was telling me about the Shaving burn off they do once a month.. I guess it's something to see...

Thats a great setup! Mine isn't looking as good. I should remedy that.

I have used both the Doan and the Coughlans versions. The current coughlans version has much to be desired IMO. For one, the magnesium seems to be of a lesser quality almost as though its not as pure and seems almost porus initially, like it has been sintered from powdered metal instead of machined from solid stock. Secondly I had the ferro rod fall out of mine! It seems that a good number of others in the online community have had this same problem and it is exacerbated by cold (or likely just when you need it). All of the Doans I've had have their name stamped into the side of it. Accept no substitute.

Here is an interesting link on the matter:

BTW, thats a solid looking kit Mike:thumbup:

Well, the next mag block I buy, I'll look for the Doan's marking. I have a coghlan's one and it works fine, I see no problem with the quality of the magnsium itself, but I did have to superglue the ferro rod back on. I recently got one of the K1 mini rod ones from here: http://www.campingsurvival.com/maflfi.html I like it; works the same as the rest but fits anywhere. I'm going to replace the plain steel striker with a piece of hacksaw blade, but that's not really necessary, I just like to tinker with stuff.
LOL I just noticed the Doan's blocks are actually a bit cheaper than Coghlan's on that site.

Does anybody know if strike anywhere matches are still available? I never see them anywhere anymore.

Great kit Mike!

I've got both Doan's branded and Coghlan's branded mag firestarters. They have both worked equally well for me.

Hollowdweller, i have purchased strike anywhere matches at our local super market. The brand escapes me, but I know they are not Diamond or Ohio Blue Tip brand. I wish i could find the old-school Ohio Blue Tip strike anywhere matches that my grandparents used to have. The heads on those were huge, and they fired up easily with the mere prick of a thumbnail.
Ahhh, the good 'ol days...

Oh, and nice kit Mike. :)

I just picked up a 4 pack of the mini Diamond strike anywhere matches from the local REI of all places.

Ohio bluetips.... man does that bring back camping memories! *sound of old Coleman white gas lantern sputtering to life*
