Getting some stencils made by TUS Technologies. I found a an old sword maker's mark with SOLINGEN and two stags that I really liked and wanted something similar with a wolf head. Just trying to determine if 7/8" wide is a good size?

What do you guys think?

It's a good looking mark, but I'd print a couple different sizes out and test it against some of your common blade sizes. 7/8" is pretty big, unless you're making big ole bowies, chef's knives and swords, IMO, but if you go much smaller, you may lose a little detail on the dog head. Hard to say.

I would try scaling it down so the mark is no more than 3/8" high, and see how that effects the width.

I think it is a good logo for letterheads and stamping sheaths. For a knife mark, it will be very large at 7/8", and may be hard to see the detail at a smaller size. As suggested, try printing it out in true knife size and see how it looks. Also, be aware that it may be less crisp when etched on a blade than when printed on paper.

I think the logo is nice, 7/8 size may be fine for large blades. Ive got a stencil from TUS in 3/8 x 3/8 size with more detail than yours and it etches very clear so I wouldnt worry about that.

I think it looks like a classic maker's mark from the bygone heyday of knife making in the US. In other words, it's pretty neat. I also wouldn't worry about the size and detail as I've seen plenty with more at smaller sizes...

I also like it but will side with the others in that 7/8" is much to large. This is one reason I have kinda dropped using my old logo was because the size and to much detail. Plus I'm kinda getting away from logos/names on the edge bevels. I like them on the ricasso much more. And if it's going there it can't be huge. This pic shows both of the logos/name that I currently use on my blades. But like I said I have been working on a smaller logo with just my initials that I can stamp. My etched logo I think is around .625" (can measure it later) and to me it's way to large. I have smaller ones but the detail and fine lines are hard to etch and thy get funky.

Thanks for the replies guys! I was going for a more old time look with the logo since I make knives that represent an earlier time period. I emailed TUS and they're going to scale the logo down for me to 3/4" long. I tried seeing what it looked like smaller on my knives, but I didn't really like it too small either. Lol.

Print it on a clear address label and then put it on the blade. You can see how it looks.

Another trick is to print it on wax paper and press it onto the steel befor the ink drys

Good ideas. What I did was printed out a few different sizes on paper and cut them out to lay against the blade.

I like the head, I don't like the letters(fonds)

I tried to intentionally emulate the font which was on the SOLINGEN mark as best I could. I tried other fancier looking fonts, but I ended up liking the simple, traditional font the best.
