I got bit VERY hard on the ass by the Infi bug recently. I guess it's obvious, to anyone who's seen my name popping up on the "For Sale" threads. I say that without shame or fear (except from my wife, who has yet to see how much I've been spending on Busses lately.) In the past month or so I've picked up:
Batac with Armorall sheath
Batac with kydex sheath
GW
AD
NMSFNO LE
MNFMB
BA III
I'm still thinking I need a Skeleton Key and a Culti. Of those I have already, I think I want to make a few changes. I bought one of PorcupineMtn66's BA IIIs which I'm excited about like crazy. The only problem I see is that I don't like the black crinkle finish. I'm thinking about sending it in to Garth to have a satin finish applied to it. Since this is such a rare knife, am I committing heresy by doing this? I'll admit, this is going to be a user knife. If I'm right, the proportions on this knife make it a perfect sized utility outdoors/hunting knife and I think that's how I'll use it. As such, I don't think stripping the finish will be a big deal, I just thought I'd ask some of the experts.
When I got the NMSFNO LE from Busse, my first thought was that this thing would get a nice coat of oil and be safed for later. After talking with some of the guys up here at our little get-together, I am convinced that this thing is just to beautiful to be a safe queen. It needs signs of use to show the love I have for it. Right now I live in a place where the biggest tree within 50 miles can easily be chopped in half with one swing of my Swedish Mora knife, let alone a Busse. The coast of the Bering Sea is no place for trees. However, within a year or so I'm going to be moving to a real forest, a place where I need to chop trees on a regular basis. When that happens I plan to have my own website dedicated to my life in the Alaska Wilderness complete with pictures of my Busse knives carving up the landscape.*
I definitely plan to have my NMFBM satinized, the others I'll wait and see. I just wanted to know if any of you thought I'd be ruining a classic (the BA III) by using it for what its original purpose was. (Just asking it that way kind of gives me my answer.)
*I am a teacher in Alaska. My wife and I have decided that we're going to stay out here one more year so we can save enough to get a nice place back in a more accessible part of Alaska. I plan to have a place that's large enough to be able to accommodate guests for a nice stay. Since I have summers off, if some of you want to come up and experience Alaska's beauty, chances are we'd be glad to host you.
