The more I handle my newest acquisitions, the more I am convinced that the purists among you are safe. I don't think I'm going to touch these for a while, at least not as users yet. They still don't have the voice that calls to me to destroy a forestwith them yet. Don't mistake me: They're beautiful, they feel like they could be the knife Angrist from the Tolkien legend but I'm still looking for my perfect fit.
The blade shape and profile is perfect. Narrow enough to be graceful yet tough enough to be indestructable and useable. However there are still a few things I'm looking for that aren't there. Tell me what you guys think about my idea:
I have two Batacs. Both were bought having been well cared for but used appropriately. One I will leave as it is. The other I am thinking of sending off to Ban to have some serious mods done. I want the swell in the handle reduced in the middle so the back and the bottom are nearly straight. The G10 slabs will be rounded somewhat and carved with some kind of pattern to give them texture. The blade will be narrowed between the spine and the edge to more of the shape of a BA III. This will be ground down enough to allow for the near elimination the choil, I'd like it to be no more than 3/8 of an inch. The ricasso/tang will stay the same which will make it easier to secure it with a strap in a sheath.
The last mod is one I'm not sure is possible, I'd like some input from any of you. I'd like a metal butt on the end of the knife. This would entail grinding away some of the handle material so that steel could be attached (welded? soldered? pinned? a combination of these?) making a kind of hammer face on the end of the knife. This will make it slightly handle heavy. If I needed to use this as a hammer in an emergency I'd like to be able to.
Yes, I'm picky. Maybe to the point of being anal. What thinkest thou of my crazy ideas?
