Hesitating buying knives because they are too nice?

Get two. Use one. :)

I would just look for a lightly used one to come up for sale.

Both are good advises. I couldn't bring myself up to use my Kopa Cocobolo, R2 and few others nice knives, so I hunted down lightly used. Sometimes you cannot do this. 2013 Forum Native5 went to my pocket right after I opened the box. A year and half later I messed-up the edge with extra coarse diamond stone. O well, I consider this my learning experience. My Centofante Memory is pretty and expensive. And it is in use. We live only once and life is short.

It is a valid concern. First you have to figure out if you are a user or a collector or both. If you are a user and a knife is going to be too "nice" to use then by all means do not buy it because you will never get any enjoyment out of it. If you are a collector and enjoy just owning it and looking at it then as long as you can afford it then go for it. Personally, I fall into the user category but luckily for me I have no qualms about using a high dollar knife. Heres a couple of customs from Phil Wilson...I use these as hard as any knives I own.

And here is my Titanium Millie.

I'm a user and collector so what I have been doing recently is finding the knives I like, using them and buying sprints of that particular knife to keep in like new condition. When I think about it, it is kind of ridiculous to spend a couple hundred dollars on a tool just to look at and show off to your friends but if it makes YOU happy then do it!

There are absolutely knives that I admire pictures of briefly and then ignore because I know I would never carry them due to looks or price.
Yup. Won't buy a knife I won't carry and use. Won't buy a gun I won't shoot. Won't buy a watch I won't wear. Perhaps why I buy them used.

+1. I'm with you; all my knives are users and all my guns are shooters. In my book there's no point owning a tool just to look at it.

As a man put it on another forum I frequent, "Owning a gun or knife and not using it, is akin to not sleeping with your girlfriend to keep her neat and tidy for the next bloke".

For me, there's no such thing as "too nice to carry". I'm more likely to hesitate buying a knife because it's good, but not good looking, and there's no easy way to improve its looks.

I never hesitate to buy a particular knife because it's "too nice". But I am selective about which ones I carry and use for certain tasks. If I'm doing a real dirty job or wet work then I tend to stay away from my newer and pricier blades.

At least until the newness novelty has worn off and then I take them to hell and back. And I do buy duplicates and triplicates of certain knives. So I can use some and still keep some pristine.

I buy all my knives with the intent to use them at some point. I'd never buy something just to look at it. But, I will say that I am selective in what I use a particular knife for. If I think I'm gonna have to be really rough with a knife, I'll go with one of my throwaways.

I like the ugly ducklings, honestly. Ugly, efficient, practical knives often end up as my favorites.
