HEST as a Necker?

Hey all,

I did a few searches and found some information, but not a whole lot so far. How does the HEST perform as a neck knife? Size-wise, it seems like it would work just fine.

I was thinking about possibly taking off the scales, stripping off the coating, and then giving it a nice patina and using it as a necker. I may even try out a paracord wrap like my Izula and see how that works on the HEST. I think scale-less with the slimmer silhouette it might be better as a neck knife.

For those of you who aren't fans of neck knives, I'm not really looking to be talked out of it. It's my favorite way to carry a small fixed blade, and if you hate it, feel free to bitch about it elsewhere!

Also, pics would be great!

Thanks again...

I'd love to see how this works out!

My only concern with an HEST would be the possibility of the pry bar poking too much when it moves around in your shirt.

I say go for it...if I can stuff a 6" full lug S&W down my shorts, you can wear your HEST necklace......
ps nice weight savings ideas!

The blade and the sheath were designed to work as a necker when wrapped. I have a big neck. :)) Some folks might find it too heavy when you add in a compass, lighter and money.

You can also just stuff it in your pocket, boot or waistband. The pry bar is designed for a quick firm pull and separation from the Kydez sheath.

The prybar does act like an excellent bird's beak pommel, very secure on the draw, to say the least.

Get into a clinch with a moron or a lunatic and you didn't want to stick the point in their ear, you could get the tip of that prybar in there in that area and start doing unpleasant things with a lot of pressure. Only the most goal-driven (the taking of your ass) or chemically-fueled hardhead could endure more than a few seconds of that.

As far as neck knives are concerned in general. I never really could understand why some people hate the concept so much. ...And if they do, why they feel the need to proselytize about it so much on forums.

maybe but some tape at the end of the pry bar to keep it from bugging you

+1 on wanting to see it. I personally like neck knives, even though I really don't carry em that way. I am however, working on my Izula right now. Just stripped it today and putting some black paracord on it... Back on topic. I love the look of the H.E.S.T and would like to see pics.

I am stripping my Izula tonight. I will post some pics when I get it done. As far as the HEST, as soon as the Ol' bonus check comes I'm going to pull the trigger on that bad boy! I might give the coating a few weeks until it starts wearing, and then I will strip it and see how it looks with paracord. I love those ESEE knives!

what would be the benefit of striping the hest for neck carry?? unless its just preference. I think with body oils/sweat etc would cause it to be high maintenance for rust prevention.I've stripped my Izula and love it that way, came really close to mirror finish throughout by buffing, gave that up though as its also high maintenance..

I didn't mean to imply that I thought there was a benefit to stripping it for neck carry, I just like to have my user knives without a coating, because it just comes off anyways. I love the patina look. I am just starting out building a motorcycle, and I'm going for that kind of look on a lot of the bike as well.

to strip my Izula, I took the advice of another forum member, & soaked it in the rest of my wife's & mother-in-law's fingernail polish remover :D then I took a razor blade scraper & scraped off the epoxy. Very durable stuff. Good job ESSEE! Then I went to the sandpaper. The only thing I am not completely satisfied with was the paracord wrap... Good luck.

when you finish with the H.E.S.T as a necker & post pics, do me a favor and include your height as comparison. I am almost 5'8", so I don't wanna loof like I have a sword hanging around my neck if I follow suit.

Will do! Well I successfully stripped the coating off, and that stuff just came right off when I soaked it in the gel paint remover that I got from ACE hardware. It didn't even take 10 minutes to get it all off. Right now it is soaking in some mustard in a plastic bag so I can form a nice patina on it. I've never done it before, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out. I love the stripped look, and I was tempted to just leave it, but I know a patina can help protect the steel so I figured I'd go for it.

Camera is broken right now, but as soon as I get that sucker up and running I will upload some pics.

I agree. I've been looking alot at the HEST and, being a FMA guy, thinking of all the options it has. Lots of trapping and pressure point applications not to mention a good solid punyo with that prybar pommel. I'm probably going to get one and have a trainer made and work out some techniques with it.

If you can find someone that can have an exact duplicate made out of aluminum, shoot me an E-mail, please.

If you think about being in a clinch with someone, if you had the knife in forward grip and you were trying something like that, the point of your knife would be pointing back at you. If you had it in reverse grip, you could just use the tip of that prybar pommel to really work someone over and drop the point in them if you had to.

Pretty cool little package. This sort of stuff puts the Hostile in Hostile Environment Survival Tool. :)

DANG IT! I KNEW I should have pulled the trigger on a second H•E•S•T! I toned down the prybar on mine a little because it was poking a lot in the way I was carrying it. When I took it down a little, I ruined the prybar-ness of it, so i just took it on down so all it is now is a catch to draw the knife quickly. Have been planning on ordering another one... definitely am gonna.... sometime ... soon.... i hope.

Trying to save for a G23....

I've been wearing the HEST as a necker with the scales n it, under my shirt for a few months now, and it carries just fine. I had feared the weight over my Izula would make it to heavy, but it's not.

If a HEST is weighing you down, ya might need to eat some MetRx bars and lift some weights or something. :::ducking::: :D

Funny, I found my HEST just to bulkie as a Necker, but then again, so was my Izula. I ended up getting a KaBar Piggyback Adventure knife to use as a necker (I hate that too, just don't like anything around my neck).

Neither blade (HEST or IZULA) is too heavy for a necker, I just prefer to carry them in a pocket or on my hip....
