Anyone found good uses for the prybar on the HEST? (the spike on the pommel)
Looks like it would poke you. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

Prying?

But really though...there have been several people that have just rounded them or shortened them up. I just got a HEST fixed, and havent carried it, but I could see how it may be a bit catchy on shirts and the like.

I saw some good pics of prying in one thread or another. Someone was prying a wooden fence apart.

Now where was that? So many threads got moved around.

I don't have a HEST (yet), but I can see the pry bar being super handy. Especially out in the field when a box or bag of tools is not an option.

I use the prybar all the time. shavings, pulling nails, chiseling and it gives a great pull when you draw your knife. Some folks don't like it, but then again the world is full of knives without prybars ;))

I use it when I'm digging in the dirt, prying up rocks and crap like that when making camp. When I could do it with the blade but now I don't have to.

Like RYP says, it also allows for a good draw from the sheath, even with gloves on.

It doesn't poke me at all and I like it.

After you deanimate the enemy and build your shelter, you'll want to open a can of paint to make things look livable right? With the bottle opener, it's the perfect bush painter's companion :-)

I thought about the same thing, but carrying almost anything IWB at 3-4 o'clock as I do on a belt, that point isn't in a place it would bother me. Carried on webbing, or low and outside on a belt, even less so. I _don't_ own one ..yet, but the thought has crossed my mind re: the prybar.

I carry one IWB in everything from gay 5.11's to Brooks Brothers suits. It is not uncomfortable nor does the pick wear holes in a shirt.

Found some pics. Still can't remember where I saw those fence prying pics. I keep thinking it was a mistwalker thread, but maybe not.

I used the prybar to remove Iron pyrite from White rock bed ...

HEST fixed blade wouldn't be HEST without a pry bar
I have no problems carrying mine, and it never catches on my clothes

More pics. Thanks to mistwalker for pointing me to this set.

That bottom picture might be what I was remembering as a "fence." :o

Pry Bar part 1

I picked up an old small freight pallet today, for a first test of the mini-pry bar.

The first few shots are the beginning of getting the hang of holding onto the knife and working the pry bar in under the wood.

TO get any decent leverage, you need to use the sheath as sort of a handle, but I was REALLY concerned about it slipping off, so I stopped and reworked the lanyard, so that the knife was tied into the sheath to prevent slipping.

I went back to work and after about 4 minutes total, I had separated a corner joint.

The pry bar works, I think it's important to keep it's overall size in mind though. Obviously you are not going to tear down a wall with it, but I see it being very useful for those little things that we "might" be tempted to use the blade tip for, and thereby saving us from a broken tip.

It's also intended as a scrapper and I can see it would be fine, I also see it's use as a screwdriver tip for standard and even some Philips head screws.

Lots of possibilities for this feature!

mistwalker's modified pry bar and some "Gone in 60 Seconds" pictures. :D

I didn't remove the pry bar from mine but I did modify it. Still works great for me and doesn't hang up anywhere...plus less "printing"

The other morning I stopped by to talk with the gang at RMJ. While I was there I played around with a belt grinder and an end mill a little and modified the pry bar on one of my HESTs a bit. I got a little more carried away than I meant to but...it works like I wanted it to now.

i seem to recall someone prying some wire staples out of a fence with one. no clue where, but it was probably in W&SS.

This set might be the ones you're talking about. From the passaround thread...

While getting to some hay bales one night in the rain I had to remove a fence insulater from a T post to roll them out to the other side, between the rain and cold fingers I couldn't get a grip on it, reaching back and pulling the Hest I found the pry hook to lend itself quite usefully in getting it off.

Now it's become a truely usefull tool, this got me to thinking what else this pryhook might help accomplish
I used it to remove a master link from a chain on the baler, not really prying but using the hook to unclip it and clip it back on.

I also used it open a can of sno seal.

I find the pry hook to be an extremely usefull feature as the knife can be used for prying and scraping without any possibility of damaging the edge, especially what I might use a knife for on the farm
