First off, sorry, no photos right now EDIT: Photos Below. Let me get all the shots organized (or take a look in the Woodland Survival course thread--there are a few in there).

It seems like the HEST is not talked to much about on this forum compared to the other knives, at least not in a non-collectible conversation, so I wanted to throw in my recent brief experience with it.

I took Jeff's survival course in AL last week and carried the HEST 24/7. I beat the heck out of it. I was actually hoping I could get it to break, or even chip. It batoned about 100' of wood throughout the week, skinned a raccoon and fish, quartered a recently killed chicken, built a bow drill, batoned live hickory, oak, pine and maple, dug up roots and rocks with both the blade and the pry bar, cut and built a figure four deadfall trap, made fuzz sticks (after a great lesson from Reuben) and scraped ferro rods dozens and dozens of times with the blade (almost wearing out a rod trying to light damp tinder!). I cleaned the blood off of it with river sand and sharpened it each night with a small, portable Lanksy thingy. It stayed muddy and wet for a 24 hour period with only a slight speck of rust on the DPx lasered section showing up.

In short, I abused it like it would be abused in a true survival situation and it came through with flying colors. I love this thing. And it's the perfect size for woodland work, in my opinion. To me, a machete and a HEST make the perfect tools for survival. I carried it in the original sheath, most of the time IWB but sometimes just threw it in my pants pocket.

Unfortunately, due to Jeff running a gulag, there wasn't a chance to use the item I most desperately wanted to try out (especially after 2 days with no food)---the bottle opener:D That had to wait until we got back to civilization.

Bottom line, I give it :thumbup:

Now, go buy a couple.

Nice review, in my future I see many HEST in my possession. What machete do you pair your HEST with?

Thanks

Hey if RYP can travel to the most dangerous places and use it to come out on the other end alive, it's one tough blade. Glad to hear you had a great time at the "gulag", had a chance to put the HEST through it's paces and learn some new skills along the way. It really is one great knife and is tough as hell.

that's a great review! :) can't wait for the pics! i'm going to get one,as soon as can get the funds together! :D

What do you mean two days with no food? You guys had plenty of "food". That was the first time I got to handle the HEST, and now I am having to order one. I loved it!

Nice post...true it hasn't been talked about much as far as use... Those who don't have one really should consider it on thier next blade purchase... I use mine at work all the time.. Prying aluminum and stainless rivits, cutting against metal, and cutting all sorts of things, the ceramic rod brings the edge right back...

Todd, the bee man himself, emailed me yesterday and he's going to get a hive together to bring over and put on the farm.

Ok, a few photos-I think Jeff and Reuben have more.

I used the ESEE Lite machete. I didn't know jack about machetes before the class and trying out everyone's gave me a good reference point. The ESEE is the way to go. MUCH lighter than the others. Several folks asked to borrow mine.

Wow.... I wonder if my fallkniven F1 could handle all of that

Several guys used...er...I mean, ran the F1 there. First time I'd ever seen one. They are good knives. I like the fact you can scrape the spine on the firerod to get sparks and save the wear and tear on your blade.

Course it could. F1 is a great blade too. Spine casts an incredible shower of sparks.

Nice pics. The hest is slowly growing on me!

Awesome photos!

What kind of wood is that you are batoning the notch in for the hearth board?

I was one of those guys with the F1, but after using your hest a few of times I definately would like to add one to the arsenal. it was a very functional knife I enjoyed abuseing yours a bit while we were there.

Thanks for the review and pictures. The HEST is awesome. It sounds like you used the heck out of it. I find I like having the pry bar and find new ways to use it. I could see the HEST and the Lite Machette being a great combo.
