Little update on this thing. In order to make it flat, I would have lost too much metal.
So I flat-filed it hard to make flat and smooth what is left of the original surface/plane. I tried to clean out and sand the heavy pitting as well. I kind of figured if it cant be totally flat then maybe I can help it out by sanding out the pitting so there werent sharp transitions. It feels smooth but not flat with your palm on it.
Better light my work area is kind of dark.
I think the bevel is all one angle. Tried to match the toe shape to the existing one (it seemed right, more or less). There are a couple of spots on the edge I plan work out before hanging. I've actually done some of it since I took these pictures.
Im not sure what else I can to the back/cutting face to get it looking more like an intact hewing head besides sand it to a grit or two higher to remove some of the scratches. Input is great.
I realize its going to be a user but that doesnt mean I will shortcut it I like having something in the vise I figure.
