Ha. At what point would some of you guys say that "X" number of knives is a lot. 300? 400? 500? 1000?
Just kinda curious. I always though a collection with more than 50 knives counts as a lot.
For a collection of Porsche cars or vintage airplanes, 50 is a
lot.
But pocketknives... it just depends. For a very focused collection, Spyderco Q variations for example, 50 is definitely a lot. Or if someone could track down and buy 50 different custom knives from the same maker, yeah that's a lot. Or even if someone was only collecting for a short time, then 50 could be a lot.
Heck, two could even be a "lot" depending on circumstances. If someone collects Herron-Paragon collaborations for example (I think there were only two of those ever). Or if someone was to collect very expensive and exclusive art knives, two could similarly be a lot.
But for a dedicated Accumulator who's been at it a while, 50 isn't very many in the overall scope of things. Consider how many millions of knives are made each year, perhaps tens-of-thousands of different models, hundreds of different mass-manufacturers and thousands of custom makers... At the rate of 1 one knife purchase per week, 50 is less than a single year's worth.
In short, there's no right or wrong answer to your question. Buy what you like, as many as you like, and keep them as long as you like. Be a
Collector, an
Accumulator, a
User, a
Swapper, or any combination. It's all good.
