Hey all you experienced collectors, I need your opinions please

Holy cow that's a lot of knives.

Not really, I've only been collecting for about 5 years, and that number includes like 20 SanRenMu/Land/Bee knives that you can get for well under $20 each. I bought a bunch of these Chinese knives a couple of years ago to compare build quality to the mainstream knives that I normally buy. The quality for the price was amazingly high on MOST of these.

I think I would get bored really fast with only 15 knives. LOL I can't even keep myself down to that many WATCHES.

Grow the Spyderco range. Kudos to, Sal. Sell the rest. Replace with a few high end folders, and
the odd custom. These are always good for a rainy day if need be, later on. Enjoy. Have fun. Atvb.

I've given away all the knives I don't particularly need or want. Many Buck 110's (kept my customs and old no or two dots), Kershaw OD-1, Kershaw skyline (kept one), RH Pal, a couple of Leatherman's, Buck Crosslock, Swiss Army Knives (still have a few)...etc.

Sometimes you can peak someone's interest in blades by doing this.

I'm a serial collector too for knives, pens, flashlights, books, movies, etc. It's a balancing act between quality, quantity, usage and collecting. I started seriously in August 2005 with Benchmade and Spyderco as my anchors and tried to stay at around $100-$150 but I do have stuff below $100.

I suggest giving away (friends, coworkers, contests, etc.) some of your duplicates and/ or the lower end ones. Some of the ones that are barely used and of value you should sell and fund a PayPal account.

Ha. At what point would some of you guys say that "X" number of knives is a lot. 300? 400? 500? 1000?

Just kinda curious. I always though a collection with more than 50 knives counts as a lot.

For a collection of Porsche cars or vintage airplanes, 50 is a lot. :)

But pocketknives... it just depends. For a very focused collection, Spyderco Q variations for example, 50 is definitely a lot. Or if someone could track down and buy 50 different custom knives from the same maker, yeah that's a lot. Or even if someone was only collecting for a short time, then 50 could be a lot.

Heck, two could even be a "lot" depending on circumstances. If someone collects Herron-Paragon collaborations for example (I think there were only two of those ever). Or if someone was to collect very expensive and exclusive art knives, two could similarly be a lot.

But for a dedicated Accumulator who's been at it a while, 50 isn't very many in the overall scope of things. Consider how many millions of knives are made each year, perhaps tens-of-thousands of different models, hundreds of different mass-manufacturers and thousands of custom makers... At the rate of 1 one knife purchase per week, 50 is less than a single year's worth.

In short, there's no right or wrong answer to your question. Buy what you like, as many as you like, and keep them as long as you like. Be a Collector, an Accumulator, a User, a Swapper, or any combination. It's all good.

I know someone with so many Beatles and Eric Clapton albums, the artists themselves may not know some of them even exist. Collecting is an interesting practice, and as long as it doesn't become a problem it's perfectly fine and fun. But that sure is a lot of knives in my opinion, and if you think some of them would be better off in new homes then set them free. It's really up to you. I'm sure out of that many I could give one or two a comfortable new life. I always like buying used...reduce, reuse, recycle!

if you want to see the knives being used send 1/2 your collection to our soldiers overseas.

Well, I decided to go ahead and thin down the herd a bit, and cut out about 60 knives that I'll be selling. I could have gone farther, but I didn't add any of the Chinese branded knives. Once I paid for the shipping I'd just be basically giving them away, so I'll just gift them to friends locally. I even took a bite out of my Spydie collection, and boxed up almost 20 of them. Plus I have a Give Away going on here that will take care of another 6. By the time I'm done I'll be down to under 150.

Think I'll take the proceeds and fund a two or three customs that are sold in the Knifemaker's Market here on the forum.

Great strategy!

I've been thinking along similar lines but don't have much in low end knives. So far, I haven't sold any but have given plenty away as gifts and giveaways. Funding top notch customs is a great goal.

I currently have 8 locking folders with 2 more on the way. I'd like to get my collection down to 5 one day. They are all knives that are 200$+ I'd rather have 5 1000 $ customs than 50 100$ knives.

I still don't think that I'll be buying $1K knives. I am really liking the stuff that Alan Davis makes. Think that I'll see about having him make me a couple.

in one's twilight years,
personal possessions either wither away in some forgotten corner,
gets unwittingly thinned out by sneaky family members,
dubious "friends" and even at times,
get whisk away by unscrupulous strangers.
it's best for an individual to decide the fate
of one's pride and joy
in one's own time.
whilst still retaining some reasonable amount of faculties.
with age,
it gets harder as time goes
to be in control of anything.
memories will fade.
the responsible thing is to list down the value of everything.
decide who gets what.
and late fate decide the rest...
or you can stop accumulating this day on,
and dispose accordingly.
