Hello all. I am coming up on 1000 posts, so I thought I would do a giveaway here in W&SS. I have learned a lot of cool stuff on BF and have met some great people. I'd like to give a little something back. So, here's the rules:

1. This is open to Canadian and U.S members.

2. It will run until the 26th of January. Gives anyone who wants to enter time to do so.

3. Post as many times as you want.

4. Winner will be determined by random number draw, just to keep it fair.

Here's what I need from you folks. I recently got a custom sheath for my RC-3.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=706574

I'm looking for input on what to put in the accessory pouch. I'd like it to remain simple and as flat as possible. I have a tiny Altoids tin that slips right into the pouch. You can incorporate this if you like. I am open to all ideas. Weight is also a factor, so I really don't need small SAKs, sharpening stones, signal mirrors, things of that nature. I'd like to be able to cover the survival basics. The only thing in there right now is the striker for my firesteel. So, get creative and you could win:

A copy of Survivorman Les Stroud's book "Survive!".

Since I received the "extreme" edition for x-mas, my regular edition needs a good home. This is a great read and contains info for newbies or experts alike.

Thanks for making this a great place to hang out:thumbup:

nice blade!

put in:

firesteel, thin piece of fatwood wound in jute (for tinder), bic and some waterpur tabs, and clip a fox40 to the outside

I never go to the woods without a whistle. In your case perhaps a Mini Fox 40 or an Aerowave zipper pull whistle attached to the end of some paracord. Speaking of paracord, since there may not be room in the pocket, I would remove the fire steel loop and run a couple of pieces of bike innertube around the sheath, underndeath the pouch, then put the firesteel loop back. This would allow you to band a length of paracord to the back of the sheath. Wouldn't be too bulky.

In the altoid (if you use it) I'd put some water purification tabs and maybe a heavy sewing needle. The inner strands can be taken out of the paracord and used as thread to repair clothing, gear, etc. The needle can also come in handy for getting out splinters, etc. I'd also put some tinder in the tin. Little bag of PJCB maybe.

Depending what size altoid tin you are talking about, I'd add a Streamlight Microstream single AAA light or a keyring light like a Photon or the like. If there's room, shove in a Mini Bic lighter.

So:
Whistle
Paracord
Water Purification Tabs
Sewing Needle
Tinder
Light
Mini Bic

Pretty good basic kit, I'll add stuff as I think of it.

I'd go with the following:
➸Waterproof matches
➸Cotton balls soaked in triple antibiotic (tinder and first aid)
➸Tightly folded bin liner (water transport, emergency poncho/shelter, hot rock water boiling, emergency sleeping pad, emergency whistle, snow-goggles, etc...)
➸Fishing snells
➸Paracord
➸Photon light
➸Button compass
➸Small mirror
➸Tiny emergency whistle made by carving the excess plastic from one of these (works great, every tin needs one):

I'm sure I could think of more but I don't know if you'd be able to fit more :D
Thanks for the opportunity!

Personally I'd gut a RAT E&E kit and see how much of it I could force into that pouch. :D:thumbup:

You said you wanted it as simple as possible - my suggestion, except use the Altoids tin.

I'm not entering the contest, though, because I have Survive, however, will you tell me what's the difference between the regular and extreme versions, other than a DVD with the extreme and the paper quality?

Doc, thanks for the link. The Ultimate Edition has color photos, the dvd and a retina searing yellow cover. That's pretty much it. As I said, I received it as a gift from someone I love:). Otherwise I was very satisfied with the "regular" edition.

You could put your social and beer tickets in it!!. Just kidding, Rope would be my choice specifically decoy line.

If you don't have access to fatwood, you can also make fire straws (petroleum jelly + cotton ball stuffed inside a straw and sealed at both ends). Nice thing about the straws is they can be made any size and hardly weigh anything at all. And very easy to light with firesteel.

Now I don't feel bad about suggesting a pack of magnum XL condoms. I've heard they can also be used as water containers....:)

A folded up piece of plastic, to make a solar still, might be a smart addition if it can fit...

I'd pick either the Basic or E/E RAT survival kit and after I'd figured out which one I wanted. I would open up the survival kit and cram as much as I could into your altoids tin. There you go, survival kit finished.

Fishing line and hooks are nice to have, but you said be creative so how about some condoms? If you find no other use for them you could use them to hold water in an emergency.

Stuff that I carry every day that I use more than my survival/SHTF gear.

Tweezers
Eyeglass repair kit/screwdriver if you wear glasses/sun glasses
Microfiber cloth for cleaning lenses.
Plastic toothpick/dental floss thingies.

You should also have an allen wrench/Torx wrench that fits the screws on your RC3 and/or the screws that hold the clip on your folder so you can snug 'em up if they get loose.

Thanks for the chance,

Chris
