Hey Doc - what is this stuff? I have no idea and only see it around the water.

I have no ideas here.

They're part of the root system. Since the cypress grows in swampy areas, they send part of their roots up above ground/water.

Hey myright, it looks like you already have your answer - a good thing because I sure as hell don't know.:(

Where do you live? The only plants that I have a passing familiarity with are a few that grow in the northeast U.S. and Canada.

We don't have Cypress trees up here, except for Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) which, apparently, is a member of the Cypress family.

Yep, Cypress knees. They grow from most cypress trees as part of the root system, no one really proved the purpose one way or the other. Some say for air. I remember as a kid, seeing them used as lamp bases.

Sorry for jacking this thread, but I think it's unfair to put DOC or anyone for that matter on the spot like this thread does, albeit unintentionally. I think it would be a more sensible to say, "What the heck is this?" and let people, including DOC if he want to, take a stab at it, than putting DOC specifically on the hot seat in front of the whole forum. Nuf sed. Rantova.

Hey LittleHairyApe,

I thank you for your very thoughtful gesture and it's probably right in most cases. In my case, however, I don't feel like I'm put on the spot. I'm no expert by a long shot, and don't claim to be, so I have no problem saying, "I don't know".

I was out on a short hike today, with my wife, and she has a one-of-a-kind knack for only asking me to identify plants I don't know :o, so you see, I'm used to it. :D

Actually these are two real examples of what makes this such a great place. One person who is comfortable giving a shout out to a brother forum member for a bit of help, and another who doesn't want to see a brother forum member put on the spot. (I hope I explained this well  )

Anyway, Cheers! :D

Not putting him on the spot at all. I'm not sure if you've seen the many other threads that are questions specifically to Doc asking similar questions. By me opening a thread that asks Doc a question like this is a sign of respect to Doc and is knowledge of plant life.

Doc - I hope you took no offense to this.

Hey bro - Sorry if you felt that you were put on the spot. I don't think you took it that way and I sure as heck didn't mean it that way.

I'm in DE and I was hiking in a State Forrest so there are quite a variety of trees planted here.

Anyhow - I've got my answer and am closing this thread as I don't want it to turn into something I didn't intend.

Thank you all for your help.

Those be the stomach bruising %(&@(@# root system projections that always get in my way at 4 am while wading out in the swamp to duck hunt.
