hey ferrous

well, these kinds of shuriken are not spun in flight, they only turn a little bit and their effectiveness requires a sharp point and momentum (mass times velocity)
So this design is my attempt at the best of both worlds.

the reports from Ferrous indicate that this design is going to be a genuine success!

I think the steel is too hard on a center punch. Also, they're uh, too small for this application. The one in the posted pic is 8 inches OAL, with 2.5 if it being angled to the point.

Ferrous,

Would you consider making these on a regular basis? If so, how much? Who would we see about sheaths for them?

John, who likes bo shuriken

Spectre,
IF ferrous hooks you up you will be very happy with my "fat boy" shuriken design.
Apparently they work as well as I had hoped and are nigh-indestructible.

Now, these are not spinning shuriken. These are direct-hit type shuriken and take a little getting used to that kind of release. However, they penetrate very very well.

Right, Ferrous?

Spec,
you wanna buy my old set?
(1 month old)
They are hari-gata bo shuriken.
15 cm by 5 mm
20 of them with laquered wrappings.
They are just too skiny for my fat stiff fingers to hold properly in the traditional grip.
Email me if you are interested.

but they were kind of a joke. Wasn't til I got the proto of the one Danny spec'ed made that I realized that _this_ is a real thrower.

Spec, I might consider it, although I'd need Danny's premission to follow the old designs again fer another run. I know I'll be making six more for Danny eventually, so i might consider making a few more...but I have to finish DIJ's order first.

Danny, whaddaya say? Mind if I follow the old dimenions?

Keith

you can make spec anything he wants.
spec, my fingers are stiff so i had ferrous make these shuriken out of 1/2 inch stock, normally they are about 10 mm stock.
if your hands are smaller, thinner or more flexible, you might want to ask for smaller shuriken.
(to save weight)

I'm a hobbit.

Then again, I usually like large weapons...my canvas micarta bo is 74" long, 1 1/4" diameter, and weighs about 3x as much as a hickory bo. OTOH, I have discovered the GRS is too big for little 154 lb me... :(

John

nice length. I sold a Naginata in that length (that I assembled and etched) to a buddy recently.

Spec, I just re-upped on my materials (1/2" square rod stock) so I have some more to work with. I'll write you doown on the "to do" list, but there are about two projects in front of yours (not counting my own projects, which always seem to get pushed back).

I'll get with you in about a month or so, Spec, and we'll start work on them fer ya.

Thanks!

That's the biggest fallback of doing work on the outside.:(
I love being able to do things for others, but I've found that if I let my own stuff fall behind to far I'm not anxious to do anything.:p :grumpy:
So, I've started trying to keep up with my stuff on a regular basis. the God(s) know it takes me forever to do anything and now that we've started back to the gym it's gonna take forever and a day. :(

Here here. I sometimes wish I wasn born 10 million or more years in the future, where the slowing of the universe will grant us 30+ hour days.

I couuld throw together a simple sheath design...

Lemme get more made first.

On the Archives Page:

Danny's name isall over the site, this is just an example.

There's some interesting back-and-forth among the pages Re: the sidearm or overarm thow, and which is 'correct.' After having tried both, they each ahve their strengths. With 'star' shuriken, it seems that the horizontal thrwo carries better, whereas the vertical throw seems to make the shuriken drop faster along its path. Perhaps Soke's advice on the horizontal throw (calling it a frisbee style throw) is more accurate that we think--the shuriken planes thru the air, like a small wing (or the whirling blades of a helicopter?). I think it's easier to get lax with technique if you throw overhand, as you may end up with a baseball-throwing swing as opposed to a sharp flick release.

I dont really need sheaths for the shuriken, but a cylinder of heavy leather or bamboo with a strap to attach it to the body would be fine.
OR
A wooden board with little loops to hold the shuriken in place like a display would be fine.
I intend to use them quite heavily, so a leather carrying bag might be the best thing.

Can someone do something along those lines?

I think something similar to a cartridge loop carrier would be cool, perhaps with 3 or 4 loops for the li'l guys.
