Hey guess what happened to my Spyderco Endura

I had a working Spyderco Endura 4 FFG with a Blue handle.
Now it's a friction folder.
Why, you ask?
I dropped it on my plastic floor, and the locking bar ripped the locking edge right out of the blade tang. What's extra funny is that it broke off in a curved fashion, following the tang curve, so it works perfectly, except for the fact that it can't lock.

I think you should contact Spyderco and ask them if they can either sell you or send you a replacement part.

Since the blade tang and the locking bar are matched/machined to one another, there's really no such thing as a replacement part. If they replace one, they'd also have to replace the other. In other words, that's a new knife.

Not sure if Spyderco would do that for free, though. Some other knives have been cracked/broken at the same location (tang to lock bar interface), by users who've been abusing the knife (hard flipping, stabbing aggressively into hard surfaces, throwing, etc.).

Accidents do happen (like dropping), and I'm not judging anyone here. But, I'd bet some manufacturers have seen this before, for all the wrong reasons.

That being said, there's still one way to find out what they'll do about it. Just ask 'em.

Wha? I find that hard to believe? Do they really adjust the lockup on every single knife?

They have to. In order for the two faces to mesh perfectly (with everything flush), they have to be machined to match. I confirmed this for myself, when I swapped blades between two of my Enduras. Had to swap the locking bar with 'em, because, for one knife, the blade would lock in a not-quite-fully open position, and for the other knife, there was a gap (play) in between the blade & lock bar with the blade fully extended (open). The tolerances in the joint are so small, that being just a tiny bit off will create problems like that. No two knives are going to fit together exactly the same. The knife might be 'usable' as such, if imperfectly fitted. But no credible manufacturer in their right mind would warranty something like that. It's the sort of thing that'd never make it past QC, if the knife were actually built that way.

Wow, that's some serious damage from the floor. Sorry it had to happen to your Endura, but interesting none the less. I bet Spyderco will send or sell you the bar on the cheap.

Now who was saying lockbacks are stronger than liner locks? :p

+2 on sending it to Spyderco - I bet they replace it or give you a discount on a new one...but maybe they chalk it up to misuse - no offence

No there not. They stated that they are not themselves which is why some of the lock backs have slight up and down bladeplay since they are NOT adjusted to each other.

That said my lockbar sticks up when the knife is closed about 4mm's and they won't do anything about it when i contacted them. :*(

If you send that in they will replace it for you, however, probably at the $20.

spyderco has awesome customer service. i bet they'll take care of you on that.
