Alright, here is the story. We cut down this fairly large oak tree in the back yard about 2 years ago. Busted the stuff down to logs about 3' long down to the trunk. I burned most of the tree in the smoker cooking steaks since, and all that was left was the last 3" section up from the stump. So, I figured what the hey, cut a 6" round off that log this afternoon, and started busting it down for knife scales. I was not anticipating any figure whatsoever, just some plain jane free knife scales. But check it!!! I was so shocked! Tihs piece is 6"x1.5"x.90" It has been sitting in the back yard for so long, I figure it's dry enough. I am about to get spun up to stabilize my own stuff, got the vacuum chamber in the mail today! So, no need to send this stuff out to get stabilized. After I stabilize it I am gonna let it sit for a few months so it can move/twist, whatever before I use em.

Great looking stuff Gixxer. I made a ring inlay just today with Red Oak Burl, and it really looked nice when it was finished. Yours will pull out even more contrast when it's finished too. Let us know how the stabilization works out.

Wow looks really cool the bottom piece has Mary and Jesus face on it, Marys is on the left. It has allot of eyes on it.

Dude..............is that live oak? If so, then it should be tougher than a school cafeteria pork chop. You may not need to bother stabilizing it. It has held up for a number of years in the framing of the U.S.S. Constitution, so I don't think a knife handle will present much of a challenge....lol. That is some wild figure. Kinda makes you want to sneak out in the middle of the night and illegally cut some of those old grandfather oaks in Brandon and Plant City to see how gnarled they are inside:D

With the Mary and Jesus faces, you could certainly sell this on ebay for millions!!! It's all in the marketing.

Seriously though, that will make some really nice handles.

That's gorgeous. I guess you just never know what you've got till you cut it open. I saved a bunch of chunks of maple burls and stuff last summer when camping... guess it's about time to cut some and see if it looks like anything.

Think of all the pretty wood you already burned up :)

It is live oak, but I really do not want to take any chances with the wood pulling away if it gets wet. Being an FNG at knifemaking I am afraid, especially if I want to sell a product. But yea there are some pretty nasty Poltergeist lookin trees around my house FO' SHO' !! Hey man, I can send you some if you like, I have to break the block down more. I can give you a piece big enough for about 3 sets of scales, or a block for hidden tang. Lemme know.

Dude I just dont see it, lemme borrow the 3D glasses please!!

Nice looking slab there. Although I would doubt it's dry enough for stabilization if it has only been down for 2 years. I'd weigh it now and weigh it again in a month or so.

I got a nice looking slab of highly figured oak similar to yours from the firewood pile.

Good find,

Alex

I just cleaned up another piece, it looks even badder than the first. The pics do not do justice like the first set. One side has a shallow crack, but the piece is 6" long so I have room to play with.

Oh, Yeah.....i wouldn't mind trying a block of that stuff. I would just soak it in linseed oil myself......no stain or stabilizing, etc. You should take a look at some of the live oaks at the park at Kings and Bloomingdalen out in Brandon. Talk about some old, gnarled trees!!! Unforutnately, a lot of cities won't let you cut thosegrandfather oaks, even ones that are only like 70 years old and were planted by us settlers like the ones on Davis Island and in South Tampa

That is about as nice a piece of oak as I have seen.

You don't see that kind of figure very often in "farmed oak" but if you look at some old French furniture made from Limousin oak, you will see a lot of curly figure.

LOL mrsenoien... all except the very hardest-core vegans still cook their food...
...trees are people, too, and wood is murder

hmmm...I know three vegans and none of them cook any food, it's "bad for the enviroment" all of them also keep their apartments hot in the summer and freezing in winter. one of them doesn't even drive a car!

of course they got mad when I pointed out they could simply kill themselves, that would be MUCH better for the environment, no more carbon dioxide being exhaled every moment, no more plants being turned into heat energy...etc :D

ROFL! What more can I say? My standard response to vegetarians is to ask them, what the heck do they think their canine teeth and digestive systems are for.... *shrug*

The best is when you meet a blowhard vegetarian and they're wearing $300 leather shoes... yes, I mocked her mercilessly.

Shoot me an E mail, its in my profile so I can get ya some. Let me know what shape/ size you want the wood in. I guess I could try the linseed oil on a couple.

*sigh* and you just burned all the other....see, this is why people go vegan!!! :D
Vegan? NEVER!! That tree went to some darn good cue and steak cookin!

Not to mention they were stealing our oxygen too. I hate thieves.
