Long time no post. This is my latest hunter, cable damascus with cable pins, butterscotch micarta, tapered tang. Sorry, Mr. Salaverria, please believe me when I say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...
Thanks for looking, guys.

Looks great.

How did you get the cable pins in there so that the micarta filled in the gaps around the individual strands?

Hey Salem,

Good to hear from you again. The knife looks great! Are you all settled in your new-old digs?

How did you get the cable pins in there so that the micarta filled in the gaps around the individual strands?

I wondered this too. Did you back fill with micarta dust mixed with an adhesive? I sure can't see that in the photos.

All the best, Phil

Thanks fellas, for your comments. Yes Phil, I am settled into my new-old digs, and liking it fine. Okay, living off the grid can be a bit of a pain in the ass when making knives, but I'm getting into shape always running for the generator... I have to admit, I just found the closest size drill bit to the cable strands, drilled, pushed cable soaked in epoxy through, let it cure overnight, and ground then polished them flush. When the cable is pushed through, it seems to expand just a wee bit for a very snug fit in the hole. I guess that clear Devcon just kinda went invisible or actually looks like the micarta, because even when I look at it up close, it really does look like I went to an absurd length of trouble to make the micarta fit the cable... lucky I guess. First try, I saw an Ariel Salaveria knife with cable pins and just had to give it a go. Oh, and often my cable looks a bit tighter and twisted when I pretwist the cable before tacking and welding, however I also like pattern like this that comes out when I just leave the cable be before I weld it. I actually made this billet from four 10" pieces of 3/4" cable tacked together at the ends. My dad and I drew it out smith/striker style. He's almost 70, but threw that 10# hammer until we had four solid knife length bars out of the billet! Damn I gotta get a press. How's your press working out, Phil?

I really like the knife but have to add that I think it really could have benefitted from a nice piece of burl. Much too nice for micarta IMO but hey that's just me...

Glad to here all is well Salem! I haven't been able to work with the press as my new shop space at our new high school has very limited power (only has one 110VAC duplex receptacle). SNAFU around here I guess. I have an old air cooled diesel generator I hope to be able to figure out then I might be able to get something going.
