i started making knives 3 years ago by cutting them out and grinding the heck out of them now i have a forge and anvil and stuff i sort of know how to make a knife but i want to know exactly what im doing before i give them to my friends and family. ive used railroad nails for practice and am starting on one made out of a leaf spring. later im going to order some d2 tool steel from a place down the road. im new to blade forums but have read alot of yalls stuff in the past.

I would scroll down to the knife makers discussion forum and click on it. There are a lot of knife makers there that will help you out on your knife forging questions.

The best advice I can give you is don't start learning to forge with D2. It will be expensive and frustrating.

I'm with Kuraki on this one, Stick with some simple carbon steels like 1084 or 1095. They have a wider temperature range for forging and as heat treat goes, you could get away with a really simple forge setup. Steels like D2 require more complex heat treats and have a small forging temperature window, not to mention it's more expensive than simple carbon steels. I think you can get a 1.25" x 1/4" x 48" long piece of 1084 from NJ Steel Baron for $27 (plus shipping) once it's back in stock. I hope this helps, Good luck!

ok guys ill follow yalls directions because my setup is in an old propain tank with a box fan and a trash bag blowing air through a steel pipe but i have a nice anvil :)

I believe it is in the stickies. Basically you make an account with a photo sharing site like IMGUR or Photobucket and you upload your photos onto your account there. When you look at one of your pictures on the site, there will be a few links/codes you can copy and paste into your message. Copy the one that says "IMG" next to it and paste it into your message here.

Here is a picture of what it will pretty much look like (In this case, I used Photobucket). I highlighted the link you need to copy and paste-

thanks man i looked all over for how to post pictures but now i cant figure out how to post threads or anything i posted this thread monday but i forgot what i did lol
