Ok. I'm in the market for a new fixed blade. Custom, short, fat, and stubby. Carbon, non-stainless. I do not like wooden handles. One of the most important thing to me is the craftsmanship. It doesn't have to be the prettiest thing or the most expensive. Just good care and quality. I want a strong edge with alot behind it. So I want to stay away from hollow grind and FFG. I don't like differential HT and it has to be full tang.

Uses include EDC, defense, a user, anything and everything. Here is a knife I have and like very much. I've had it for around a year. I edc it everyday. Thanks for your help. http://www.stknives.com/BACKUP.html I have a drop point.

Bark River Gunny, tough little bastard:

Specs:

Overall Length: 8.4 Inches
Blade Length: 3.775 Inches
Blade Steel: A-2 @ 58rc

thanks for the input! Did you know all tops carbon knives are differential HT, at least i think so. Im really not a fan of the swedge. I'm really tryin to stay small company/custom. The handles on both look nice. I am a fan of G-10.

Keep'em comin !

Do a google search for Michael Morris. I believe he is a member here as well. He makes some of the most fantastic knives at great prices and I'm sure he could come up with something that would be perfect for you.

Andy Roy (Fiddleback) can certainly make what you're looking for. He does excellent work and even has his own forum here on BF.

This could be something for you: the recent Pohl Force Charlie One. Very hard D2 steel, 5mm thick. No nonsense light sturdy EDC. Yes, the CR Professional Soldier is somewhat similar in looks because of the open lump of metal design, but keep them side by side and you see that they really are very different. In fact the Charlie One is the naked variant of the CT1 which Pohl Force made in limited numbers for a German weapons distributor.

Hi technician1 -

Here is a link to a post where Stomper of JK Knives made some fat little stubbies for a customer, who supplied the design(s) to Stomper.

Have you ever thought about penning out your own design just as you envision it in your minds eye? How would it sound to be able to say "I designed this for myself and had a custom knife maker turn it into 01 steel and G10".

There are several custom makers here at BF who can do just this for you.

best regards -

I was going to suggest Dozier or Crotts if you want a cutter/slicer but looks like you want a thicker blade - you will lose the cutting ability.

think about poltergeist knifeworks (Maker's name is Jakub and he's based in Poland) - very progressive designs...rather 'tactical' looking, strong aggressive grinds. Think European Tomuyuki Nemoto :)

I'm thinking Bark River. Maybe a Bravo-1, Gunny (as mentioned previously), or a Drop-Point Hunter. Or a little shorter with a Highland Special, Woodland, or a Lil' Drop-Point Hunter. For shorter and stubbier, maybe the Saex, the Tusk, or even a PSK, depending on how short you're willing to go.

For the ultimate tactical/bushcraft with a convex grind, I'd take a BRKT STS-3 or 5.

Man, those Bark Rivers, Fiddleback's, and custom Hortons aren;t getting any cheaper!!!

You want a serious convexed fixed blade? In any steel you want...M4, 3V etc Check out the link in my signature.....

Nope, didn't know they D-HT'd their blades.
I actually figured you'd dislike the swedge, given how you laid out precisely what you wanted. I guess that's why they call it custom :) OTOH, the swedge would be a defensive additive, if a little gimmicky looking.

Good luck with your search.

My buddy just made me this OAL 9" blade length 4.5", brown canvas micarta handles, brass pins, 1095 steel, strong convex edge with a kydex sheath and Tec-lok.

This knife is one ugly user! I told him what I wanted and got what I asked for, nothing fancy. I used mustard to patina the blade last night. When I want a knife to use with no regrets I won't think twice about uglying up this baby. :D

I have 2 knives (Bushboot & Bushcrafter) from Andy Roy and I'm very happy with them. I also have a couple of Bark River knives (Imp, Mini Canadian & Smoke Jumper) no complaints with these either.

Andy's knives can be hard to find but if you go to his website www.fiddlebackforge.com/otherstuff.cfm there are a couple of dealers that have some of his in stock. Or you can just lurk around his forum and jump on a knife when he makes them available. Andy does seem to put out more knives than most custom makers and he does not take orders anymore so it is pretty easy to get one of his if you pay attention to his forum. Most of his knives seem to sell real quickly, so be ready to act fast if you like one!
