I didn't think about it before, but the Pohl Force Hornet XL (a production version of a custom design) with its short but very strong D2 blade might be exactly what you are looking for:

Check out Anza Knives (see available knives here).

Most of their stuff has (stabalized) wood handle scales, but there's plenty that use other materials (including micarta). They also do custom work, and tend to be *very* reasonably priced for it. Anza knives are all made from old files (by hand, in the USA).

Awesome knives, tough as anything, great prices, and Charlie Davis is a great guy to deal with. Really, a good guy.

I've got half a dozen Anza knives, and no complaints.
