I need to do some testing and require some O1 square stock, where can a guy buy O1 in around 1/2" x 1/2" or a little under? I am used to buying much larger bars of steel for my uses, and am having problems finding it in these smaller dimensions with my usual suppliers.

Check with http://www.admiralsteel.com/ If they do not have it in house they can set up and run a special order for you. If you are planning on doing a special order you will need to called the company on the phone. Great company to work with. There is no order to small for them to do. Hope this was helpful to you Kevin. Have great successful day out in the shop.

Kevin, would 1/4" x 1/2" be big enough for your experiment? Might be a day late and a dolar short, but what the hey, I have some if it will work for you. -Matt-

I might just have something like that size out in the shop. I'll bring you a piece to Janesville, Kevin. Assuming, of course, I can find it.

Mr. Cashen asking where to buy O-1 ...

OK, I'll admit it ... The thought had occurred to me that this was some sort of trick quesiton.:D

Kevin, you can get 3ft of Starrett O1 from KBC Tool in 1/2" x 1/2" for $33.51 (page 783 of their on-line catalog). They also sell it in 18" lengths.

KBC also sell O1 that's listed as being made in the "US or England" at lower prices. Every time I've ordered some of that it's actually been Starrett O1. Their web page just crapped out, so I can't check on the 1/2" x1/2" at the moment.

Sorry if I'm that dumb (surely I am, because If you choose not to forge it you must have your good reasons) but... can't you just forge a piece of usual stock into 1/2" x 1/2" square stock?
Or you want an "as is" from the mill stock and test that?

I figures Fitzo would zero in on my requirements;) . I do have plenty of sources for large bars of O1, but I have little experience in tracking down itty bitty pieces like this. It is not as much as not being able to find it at all, but rather getting folks to put me onto enough sources that I can then compare and shop around for the lowest prices, since O1 is all over the place in price right now. The reason I don't just forge down any of the huge bars I have alying around is having to precess the scale, decarb and the variables  . I need bars that are consistent and untouched by some bonehead smith. I would love to beable to buy it in a size just enough above 10mm X10mm to just put and even finish on it and go to impact testing. I have been forging and grinding the specmens but this is getting old. Even if I am doing metallography or other tests, having it in this size makes sense since it will give an even cooling that is not too far from knife dimensions and I can impact it if I want. Slicing a polishing for the metallographic work this standard size is much easier than other dimensions.

Thank you so much for the input I now have some choices.

Hmmmm....sounds like Mr. Cashen is going to have to go out into the wild and wooly market of expensive PG O1 tool stock:D
