Hey I'm new to knife making and I was wondering if anyone could help give me some pointers. I want to make a tomahawk that looks like a winkler one(cause I can't pay for a real one). I'm thinking of trying to make it like I saw I guy on YouTube make it(his username is trollskyy). Anything you guys tell me will help.
Thanks

Full tang hawk, no forging needed - use stock removal

buy a sheet of steel and cut it out

material costs on a a sheet that large and that thick will cost you more than just a knife bar

maybe 3/8" thick 12x18 ???

Lets not try and derail a new makers first project.

Bigham,
Welcome to Shop Talk. A hawk is a pretty ambitious project, but if a full tang style is made ( like The Count suggested) and the handle is cord wrapped, it is doable. What equipment do you have available to you?

The link in The Count's post is to his standard reply to newbies. There is a ton of good info there.

The best way to get a project going here is to start a thread on the project and post your basic idea including on the use for the knife/hawk, materials you plan on using, your drawings, and how you plan on doing the work. The guys here will help you along from there.

Filling out your profile was good. Adding your age would be helpful, too. BTW,What do you do on the farm?

I had no idea that posting a video of the maker the OP was asking about using the one of his hatchets would be considered a derailment

Live and learn I guess ;0)

The gear I have is a buch of files, a friends belt sander, and an angle grinder and a dremel I was going to buy this weekend and possibly a drill press. If making the hawk first without any experience would be too hard then I also have some other knives I want to make

I would post pictures of the drawing of the hawk and others knives I want to make but I don't know how to post pictures, so if someone could help me with that than that'd be awesome.

Lastly I work on a cattle farm where the main things I do are clearing land, cleaning fences and taking general care of the cows.

Bigham, you can use a free hosting service like Photobucket to post pictures. Sign up for a free account, upload the pictures from your computer, and then within Photobucket, select the IMG code of the picture you want and paste it in your reply to post the picture.

Start a photobucket account upload your pictures, then with the full size picture open, left click the area I have pointed to ( it will turn yellow) then come back here to your message right click and paste
