Hey Mete - 1045

Maybe it was something simple like 1/2 a second too slow getting into the quench?

I got it into quench quickly. I Rockwell the tang only. A file cuts easily into the edge. Maybe if I quenched in Brownell's Tough-Quench. I quenched in room temperature water.

While I sit here waiting for the olympic fencing to start - Roger I think your chem analysis was wrong - either there's much less carbon or there is decarb. Any way off to watch women's saber. I used to coach women fencers, is that why I'm a bachelor ?

No, its because you're so cranky :D

The analysis was done by a company (Metals Engineering & Testing Laboratories) in Arizona. I did not have the analysis done. He did. I do have a copy of it though. The most predominate component listed is carbon (0.47).

Anyhow, I had the blade all boxed up and ready for the post office. After reading the latest posts I unpacked it and now the blade is back in the oven. This time I will quench in Tough-Quench (room temp). I will not bother to cryo.

The only other thing that I think outstanding is I have been coating it with PBC to help prevent decarb. That may be providing a insulation from quench.

I'll be back with results.

I,m not so cranky now - Zagunis GOLD, Jacobsen BRONZE Congratulations ladies !!!!

Quenching in room temperature oil produced 7 - 9 HRc on the stick tang after tempering at 335 F for 45 minutes. File cuts edge with ease.

I soaked at 1510 F for 8 minutes. The water quench was soaked at 1500 F for 6 minutes. Both heat treats used Brownell's PBC powder for protecting against decarburation. Just using judgement but I guess both quenches were about 1 second from oven to quench and the quenches were not interrupted..

Whatever testing method you use you have to do it on a regular basis and have the proper standards and procedures .You could send it to Crucible for a second opinion .But somsthings not right.

That was one of two blades I had this weekend to heat treat that failed. The other is a 01 blade that turned out to be another mystery steel. The fellow that ground it for my customer finally admitted to him that it may not be 01. I heat treated the darn thing three times before finally comparing my oven to a REAL piece of 01.
