Not that I want to feed the flames here, but when someone asks how to drive a car into a wall at flank speed, and the answers are to try driving slower and keep to the road (just an example), it's really just meant to be helpful. They were just trying to steer you in the right direction, for your own benefit. Not to mention most makers are delighted to see someone new take up the craft.
There are many costs for a custom knifemaker, a few of which..
Good belts for a 2x72" cost ~$10 each, and it takes several to grind a bevel, before and after HT.
Machines running 1.5 -3 HP electric motors use lots of power.
The machines themselves are usually thousands.
Skilled labour as well, most experienced makers willing to do large volume are going to charge accordingly.. small runs maybe even more-so.
It really is cheaper (and more rewarding) to put the money to better use (if you have any intentions of making knives I mean).
Like I said I'm not trying to further the problem, but they were being honest and as helpful as they know how. It's a great group of guys in that forum, and immensely knowledgeable, always willing to help and teach. They do deserve some thanks and respect for that (at least from me), really they ask nothing else in return (and usually not even that).
I'm not saying you should go apologize or anything, you believe what you like. But I'm a fairly new maker who learned much from the people in Shop Talk, and learned a bit about their personalities as well. I believe if you go in with the right attitude and are willing to learn, it could be a good experience.
I've seen a couple users come in and have a bad experience like that, but made amends and became happily part of the group. I'd rather see that happen here than just another user that got mad and left, but it's entirely up to you of course.
