Hey old man, empty your pockets

J Buck, your Dad sounds like a great guy---low key and unassuming---that's all I ever need to be

Paul

My Father at 83 carries an Al Mar Hawk with black pearl handles. He has carried it for around 5 years. He loves it.

I got to thinking about this some more, and I totally overlooked my Dad. While he's not quite an "old man" yet, he's pushing 70. He carries a lot of stuff.
He always carries a Camillus TL-29. Every.single.day. In addition, [several things that are not traditional knives and that shall remain in his pockets]. At times he's carried more, but these are his constant companions and they get used all the time.

Dad carries a Schrade USA SP3 lockback and has my entire life. He farms, and it always cracks me up to see guys that work in offices think they NEED zdp-189 or better steel to open boxes or mail. The stuff he does with that knife.......$20 knife does him just fine.

My grandpa, also farmed, but is 80 now. Left school at 13 to help on the farm after his mother died. Hard man, hard life. Best grandpa ever.

I asked him what knife he carried now. He pulled out this one. He said he's had it "20 years or so," so who knows actually how long.

Great thread - I'll always remember my Dad and his Dad carrying small Camillus yellow pen knives in their front pocket (keys always went in the left pocket) along with an old, well worn "silver dollar". My Dad also carried a scout knife on occasion but favored small Finn type fixed blades whenever we were out in the woods.

My Dad, is 72 and always carried a Case medium stockman in stainless for as long as I could remember until he used it to rap on his neighbors door and broke the back spring, I "traded" him a Uncle Henry Trapper USA+ for it and he carried it until the his arthritic hands boxer wouldn't allow him to open most slip joints anymore, so I then "traded" the Uncle Henry for a Kershaw Leek that he promptly made me take the ridiculous clip thing off of and throw it in the trash. he loves his Kershaw but still calls it his boat anchor. I sent the Case to Glenbad and he sourced another back spring for it, making the Case and the Uncle Henry 2 of the most valuable knives I own.

Love it, medicevans!! And...I could not help but notice the chair...wow...the lap of luxery:thumbup:

"keep the wallet daddy-o. just hand over the knife, both of 'em."
"i can't remember his face, officer. he was wearing a shirt that said 'bl__ __rum' or something..."

Now i am closing in on sixty nine i guess i am an old man ( on the outside anyway ) i usually slip my wallet into my coat pocket along with my keys clipped to a belt loop dont need them in the house so they didnt" get their picture took.

My dad never really looked after much. He carried various Richards (Imperial) folders and pipe knives till he lost them. He had a few decent pipes, and carried one of those and his baccy pouch and lighter (cigarettes when he was younger). Never had a wallet, shoved his banknotes in his back=pocket, from which he frequently lost them. Carried his affiliation card to Hillfoot Working Men's Club and Sheffield Wednesday season ticket when needed. Only had a decent watch when I bought him one. I never even saw him wear his wedding ring. Always had a dirty handkerchief stuffed in his pocket.

My maternal grandfather carried a Rodgers 'Bunny Knife' that I remember mostly, his lucky halfpenny, wallet, a small magnifying glass, and a clean handkerchief. Always wore his Wire Weavers union badge.

I don't recall ever seeing my paternal grandfather's pocket-knife, though I'd be surprised if he didn't carry one. Kept various newspaper cuttings about football (soccer) and pigeon-racing in his wallet along with a photo of his wife and kids.

That is awesome.. Delrin handles seem to hold really well over time!

Thank you everyone for your input, I really enjoy seeing what gentlemen from the generation previous to my spoiled rotten generation used to get through their day.

If it's not a traditional knife, please keep it in your pockets.

As far back as I remember, Dad has always carried a SAK. Most recently a Super Tinker. I found a couple of old stockmans in with his tools growing up, so I guess those preceded it.

When Grandpa died, I didn't find any pocket knives, but I did find one very badly abused HJ knife. Family history was that he used for self defense as he worked evening shift at the Philadelpha Post Office in the 1930's. I consider it very ironic because my entire family is Jewish and can only speculate how he came by it. Given the religious politics of the 1930's, I suspect he "liberted" it from an anti-semitic troublemaker.

I never knew what knives, if any, either of my grandfathers used. I'm 51, but my grandfather (father's side) was born in 1871 and lived until 1951 or '52; my dad was the youngest of 8 children, and was born when my grandfather was already 50. As he grew up on a family farm, I assume they all carried and used knives. My mother's dad was born in 1893 and passed away in 1986. I knew him, but not very closely.

My late dad had a few different knives over the years. Among them were:

Camillus scout knife with wood handles, so rusted and sharpened down it was no longer useable.
Camillus medium Jack knife, carbon steel.
Unknown small pocketknife I remember stamped 'Sheffield'.
Old, convex-ground Buck 110.
Folding fishing knife, brand unknown
Christy knives here and there.

My father is 45 (I'm 19) and he's a sheetrocker. I don't know if you folks know how horrible Sheetrock is to a knife or not, but its like cutting chalk. Therefore, he doesn't carry a knife, and uses a razor-knife.

My grandfather is 75 and he carries a Chinese Schrade muskrat and abuses the heck out of it.

My other grandfather is 80..ish (?) And carries a no-name "wilcor" lock back with metal liners and fake wood inlay.

My 2 cousins and I are the only ones that carry real brands.

My dad (57) carries a case peanut or trapper. Some times he carries a smkw colt knife. My grandfather always carried a case of some kind. To him if it wasn't case he wasn't interested. My dad is just starting to accept other brands. He does still mock all of my plastic knives ie. Bm grip spyderco delica and the like.
First spyderco I ever showed him was a tenacious and the first thing out of his mouth was,"son why in the heck is there a hole in the blade, did it come that way?" Yes dad:rolleyes:

My dad would carry a small red SAK, the one with a toothpick, nail file and scissors
that had his gas company logo on it.

My grand dad carried the small Shrade Stockman that I gave him back in the 60's.
Every tool he had looked very worn out.

They would smile at us today for all our knives...or maybe join us.
