Hey old timer, how much did that knife cost new?

I didn't buy it myself, but my first real knife was a Shcrade 33OT which costed 14$ at Walmart in 2003.

In 1970, in Amsterdam, I paid six guilders for this knife, about $1.75.

Later in the '70s, I was paying $7-10 for Opinels and $15-25 for SAKs. Those knives are much cheaper now, relatively.

The first knives that I "collected" were Schrade and Camillus brand work knives I gathered as the factories closed down. In my mind, I hoped it would help prevent the inevitable. The NY made 33OT and 34OT have always brought up fond memories.

Imported knives did seem to command a premium over here. For many years (since my father was young) the above mentioned Hoffritz in NYC was a Mecca for window shopping and knife fanciers.
