Oh, maybe its call "Godzilla".
In another thread here I saw a forging tool that you inspired. I think many of us here could use one of those. Please discuss how it works and what improvements could be made if we make our own. Could you show us yours again? This may have been covered before but some cant use the search button.
Youre the man Ray.

Hey Bruce, The last time I made a gorilla I had to eat about 5 pounds of bananas and two pounds of nails. Had a good nights sleep and in the morning I just pooped it out........ You must be talking about Godzilla. Let me see what I can find.

:D I must be talking about Godzilla.
What were the nails for? I swallowed a pin when I was young and pooped it out but two pounds of nails would be rough on my old colon.

When I made this one it was 4 or 5 months after the fire so I had a limited amount of tools. I'd picked up a Harbor Freight porta bandsaw and I had just purchased a floor mount drill press. I used 5/8" X 2" 1065 to make this one. Its set up to work on the anvil I have used to do forging demonstrations with. Before you make something like this you need to have completed at least one year of Rocket Science. :D I made this one as simple as I possible could. It has two vertical pieces. The vertical piece in the front was cut so the bottom leg fits fairly snug in the hardy hole and there's another vertical piece in the back that just sits flat on the anvil surface. Drill two holes in the bottom to mount the bottom horizontal piece and one larger hole so the top horizontal piece can pivot. I did heat treat the top horizontal piece and tempered it at a spring temper. Not much to it but it really makes starting tangs and a few other things a lot easier to do.

The nails act as a binder. I found them harder on my teeth. My colon is lined with gold so thats no problem......

Hey Ray,

I am certain that you have made more than 1 gorilla... I smelled the last one you made in our room at the Blade Show!!!!!! :) :) :)

This was the inspiration for my Godrilla:) The thing works great the only change I made was to put the big block of steel on the top piece.

ray....anything you'd change to your design or do u like it the way it is.....ryan

Ryan, There's always things that can be done to improve it but for what I do it works just fine the way it is. What I made is just very basic and at the max of my abilities. :D I've used the one in the photo for 3 years now and its holding up fine. Burton added a chunk of steel to the top of his. Mine develops a little of a mushroom from time to time. When it gets bad I'll just grind it off. You could make several of these and have each one preform a different function. Actually you could use the same mounting device and just change out the horizontal pieces.

thanks ray....i'm gonna try and make one after i get done making my grinder.....i just will have to mount it on something else...i don't have an anvil with a hole....ryan

Here's a pic of an height adjustable one I picked up off of eBay a while back.

Here is mine based on Ray's Godzilla. Mine is called "Globzilla".

The blades are made from a pretty danged thick old house trailer spring.

Funny how something is so obvious once you hear it. I never thought about having others with different configurations or swapping out the arm before. One with a hot cut would be sweet...a real guillotine, so to speak!

Farmer Phil,

Is that a 'one off', or does someone on Ebay sell them? I've been wanting something like this, but lack a lot of tools (and much ability for that matter), so if they are inexpensive I would prefer to just buy one.

Thanks!

Edit to add: Never mind Phil, These are for sale as guillotine fullers by seller 'scharabo' on Ebay.

Wow that thing sure beats what I'm using now. I use an old 5 pound short handled maul to do hot cuts. Definantly going to build me one of those soon! Thanx for the idea!
Just a thought ... make another set of arms, but twist them 90º so they lay flat. now you have a beveler!

Never thought of using my "godzilla" for hot cutting... time to make another forging tool..... seems like making tools takes up at least 1/3 of my knife time :p

Got to level out the ground for the smithy I'm going to build or father in law is building for me.... not really sure how that's going to work out.

I thought about making another one for hot cutting also. I am going to have to get on that one as I have a bunch of that steel left:)
