Does anyone know if the HF diamond stone is true enough to flatten a plane sole? I am in the process of trying to convert a no-name 3 inch block plane into a razor plane. I worked through the grits (starting with a DMT aligner 120 mesh) through the HF 200, 300, 400, and 600 grits. A few rounds with polishing papers up to 8000 and the periphery appears to be flat after checking with 2 squares and 2 steel rules. TIA

Hmm... I don't know. I have a few of those for lapping stones, and flat grinding slipjoint blades, but haven't used one for finishing precision work. I usually pick them up whenever they are on sale (which is often).

I'm curious to hear others experiences, and yours as well. :)

I've used mine for that and was satisfied with the results. Not that experienced of a wood worker or sharpener so take my opinion w/ a grain of salt.
Am I correct in assuming a razor plane would be for finish type smoothing? I've been considering picking up some 15n20 sheet stock to make some card scrapers, those are supposed to be great for final surface cleanup.

@Strig -- Seems to be flat and is probably flat enough for its intended use.

@Boogaloo- I use cabinet scrapers to smooth my wood. Intend to use it to plane off leather. Still working through blade carrier in the plane body.

As a side note, the plates that they sell along side the blocks should fit in an Edge Pro stone holder. I haven't bought them because I'm not positive about them being flat. Anyone have any experience with them?

I peeled mine off the plastic backers and glued them to some flat plate. The bond to the plastic was incredably weak as supplied. I use them for sharpening in a "homemade edge-pro" type of sharpener and they work good enough, but you get what you pay for; the diamonds wear off pretty quickly.

good luck

Jeff
