Has anyone here used a box like this? They sell them for $90 out of airline skymall catalogs. Just wondering if they work well or not... if so $40 would not be a bad price.

You can make one a lot cheaper.

I bought a similar one off Ebay, but it is larger and did not come with the lights. I would question how well it works with those small lights using the cloth which is not very translucent. The one that I am using, I have 2 500 watt studio lights and two 75 watt clamp on lights to light it. It would not be nearly light enough with those dinky light.

Buy PVC pipe, elbows, and vellum or tracing paper with a couple of clamp-on lights using daylight fluorescent bulbs or two halogen shop lights to light it.

There is a good thread on how to build one, but I cannot seem to find it right now.

Here is the least expensive one and it works! http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/2006/07/how-to-diy-10-macro-photo-studio.html

Mike,

That is all that you really need!

Experiment with the lights. I like one or two on the top and then lights on the sides.

It helps is you have a camera that allows you to use custom white balance or color temperature. However, you can fix the white balance in editing. The key is having enough light--move them around until you are happy with the result.

got one from walmart. same one. it's a little too small except for folding knives. doesn't put out enough light. the material doesn't difuse light well. I am gonna make my own.

I designed mine to work with what I have, without having to buy extra stuff. I only have one desk lamp, so I could only have one source of light. I think it works good enough for most pictures with only a top light. I would like to put two on the sides like the link you said earlier, once I get more lights and a more permanent setup.

Here is a shot of mine.Cost about $40 to build. It's about two feet square.
