Hello,

I just got a great new and unused HG 55 mil over run knife and I love it. The only complaint I have is that the edge is rather thick and does not lend its self to realy nice cutting. I honed it some on ceramic sticks and it is still not satisfactory.

Has any one here had this experience? Do I have to thin it out to get it real sharp? Should I just leave the stock bevel as is and stop crying about it?

I have sent an email to Amy-O to see how much the busse guys would charge for sharpening it up for me, but I haven't heard back yet.

So do I need to stop whining and just use it, or try to thin it out?

I'm pretty sure that Busse will take care of that for you, AMYO rules and will take care of you. :) She is usually pretty busy but you'll be taken care of, trust me.

Thanks for the response. I have no doubt that Busse will do the right thing. I am just not sure if the knife not meeting my sharpness standard is covered in their warranty, or if is something that I will need to pay for.

Besides, its the weekend. I am sure she has better things to do than lurk on blade forums and wait for complaints.

Thanks again,

JT

I've gotten a handful of Busse's that had really fat edge geometries from the factory, and frankly they sucked at cutting things. After reprofiling the edges, they performed much better.

However, this was an issue that Jerry was made aware of, and he took measures to correct things - every knife I've gotten from the factory since then has had at least an acceptable edge, and in many cases they came with downright AWESOME edges.

Since your HG55 is from an older batch, that might explain the lack of sharpness. Either send it in to get reprofiled, or do it yourself - either way will work. I personally would never send a blade in for something as minor as sharpening, but some folks don't like the effort it takes to reprofile, especially if you don't have the equipment to do it quickly.

Very true MM. I like sharpening my knives, but all I have are smith stones and it takes forever to remove all that stock. If I could, I would like to have it done by the pros. I am certain that after I get the HG 55 reprofiled, it will be my most used Busse.

The ASH-1 is probably my favorite. Even at nearly 1/3 inch thick, it is very sharp. But then again, it was reprofiled by a pro.

My take on the HG-55 is that the edge is thick on purpose for durability in a combat situation.
Dig a hole with it, pry open a crate, slam it through some body armor, clean and put away, repeat:thumbup:

The corrugated bevels don't go to the end on the milli,
Instead it is a convex grind:thumbup:

As far as I know, they won't charge you anything to sharpen it. You will just have to pay the cost of shipping it there, and be parted from it for a while.

I actually thinned that edge out more than nate did when he sent it back to me, I wanted it to be splitting hairs, and it was. I sharpened it probably 20 times since getting it back from him, so the edge was no longer even a pro edge, just mine. When I sent it to you, it hadn't been sharpened in a while, so the edge was not a razor, but it was still quite sharp. Sharpening isn't that hard if you have the proper equipment. I use a 1x30 sander and various grits of belts, then hand strop with green compound, pink compound then bare leather. My suggestion? Get the 30 dollar harbor freight, some belts from leevalley and supergrit and practice on some junk knives. You're never going to be able to reprofile without the right tools. You also have bad luck with the PO, i'd be hesitant mailing out a knife.

I agree with the durability, but if it negates cutting, does the knife realy serve its purpose? If I were still in the service I would come closer to leaving it as is, but seeing that I will use it as a general purpose knife, I would like it to be a little more slicing friendly. My biggest reserve to thin out the edge comes from not wanting to eliminate too much of the super cool corrogations milled into the blade. I know that soulds realy silly, but I think those are sooooo coool and were a huge factor in deciding to purchase it.

Dito 230, I am reluctant to put anything in the mail after that ordeal. Thanks for reminding me. I just got some motivation to put some elbow grease working and get out my stone. About the ASH, it only took just a few minutes before I had it super sharp again. So, you did a good job thinning it out, it was easy to maintain.

You will be able to get that knife screaming sharp without taking much away from it.
The shop will always do it if you don't want too...

I wonder if the corrugations will turn into serrations after it has been sharpened for years?

I use the BEEE-JEzus outta my HG, I use it as a small hatchet sometimes, but mostly a slicer. I never knew there was another version of the HG other than the CG and LE.

Just call the Shop Monday and speak with Amy, I am sure she can take care of you. :D

I decided to just man up and reprofile it myself on my stones. It took about two hours, but it seems to be worth it. It is much sharper now. I didnt go to any extremes thinning out the edge, but what I did is a vast improvment. The further up those corrugations I trimmed up, the meaner they looked.

I figired I can't realy call myself a knife lover if I can't sharpen my own blades.

Also, It's a moot point now, but I never heard back from Amy. Did I send it to the wrong email? I used the email function on the drop down menu that comes from clicking the dot beside the avatar. I am sure I would have gotton a responce if the email was recieved.

I got your email and responded in kind. Thanks for the reply and for offering to fix it. Since I have already reprofiled it, sending it in won't be needed. I am still a loyal Busse fan.
