Memories Of Our Beginnings

My late husband, Uncle Bill, and I started this business
in 1988. This month I am celebrating both the
anniversary of the beginning of our business so many years ago and the
memory of my beloved husband with a special
Anniversary Sale.

We met when he was a Peace Corp volunteer and looking around Nepal to
see what he could do to improve the lives
of the villagers he befriended. Our friendship eventually led to a
marriage and a partnership that kept growing
stronger until he passed away.

His adopted son Govinda from Gorkha village gave him a knife as a gift and it stirred up an idea in Uncle
Bill's mind, "I believe we can sell these knives
and bring some money to the poor people of Nepal." I said, "No, we can't
do this." He persisted and our business
started with a little ad in a knife magazine. We worked like a team and
enjoyed every moment of building a
business that still exists today.

One day, about 10 years later, I told my husband "I think we should get
on the Internet and have an online store to
sell our knives." He didn't think that was a very good idea, but
eventually bought a computer and struggled to learn
how to use it. Next came the digital camera and the popularity of our
business grew with each addition to our
presentations.

Today, with the help of every one of you who appreciate the labor and
craftsmanship of the Kamis, we are
supporting several Kamis and schools for their children.
You, my loyal customers, are a big part of
that. We couldn't have done it without you.

So, in memory of my late husband and partner, Uncle Bill, and our humble
beginnings, consider these special knives and Sword
from my Anniversary Sale.

Congratulations Yangdu. I can't believe it's been twenty years since you've been in business. Without HI the world would not be as aware of the khukuri as it is now.

Yes, Thank you for sharing the memories with us, Auntie!

Congratulations on 20 years in business. We're wishing you all many more.
I knew i had read somewhere about Govinda's gift to Uncle, that started this Adventure.
It is good to hear the story and see that lovely Salyan Today.
I for one ,am very grateful to Everyone for the things you've shown me and brought into my life and am glad to be a small part of it.

Happy 20th anniversary to HI.
Thank you for keeping the dream alive, and using the proceeds to help those in your home country.

Congratuations, also Yangdu. You and UB have much to be proud in the assistance you have given the people of Nepal and the pleasure you have given to so many forumites. May you have many more years of success.

Email sent on:
18 inch 31 ounce Dragon WWII by Get kami. Neem wood handle. $100 even.

I'm surprised this one was still available. I almost sent an email on it this afternoon. I promised myself that if it was still available when I got back from celebrating my birthday, which was today (January 21st) I'd send an email on it.

I suppose an introduction is in order. My name is Ben, I'm now 35, and I've been checking this forum daily since a little before Christmas looking for my first HI khuk to call out to me. I think this may be it. I think it's this one: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606912

It's kind of funny, because this is the first one I saw where I decided I was going to get a HI khuk. I called my wife over to look at it, and she agreed that it was beautiful. We have several carved wood dragons that look much like the one etched on the blade. It'll look nice on display.

If it looks as good in person as it does in the photos, I might even feel a little bad about using it, but it'll get a good workout every now and then anyway. What's the point of a knife if it can't be used? :D

It looks like quite a nice community forum you have here, and I'm happy to join in, especially on this 20th anniversary occasion.

Ben

ps - If somebody else beat me to it, that's cool too... I know there's 1 (or 6) waiting for me.
