Hi All

Welcome back Buzz,

nice to hear you are ok :)

The KFF is dead? i just acquire a Point Guard (i'm a guy on budget :o ) .. so i'd like to know what do you think about it (you started the knifedom with one .. didn't you?) aspects such as design, grind, blade shape, handle ergos, etc. apart from AUS6 steel that might not hold up that long ..

Best,

Buzzbait,
Welcome back. Glad to see you are doing well. I had two questions that I've been wanting to ask you. First, how does one go about joining SOSAK? Second, what is your favorite SAK model?

Thanks,
Jason

If you keep this up you may start to rival Cliff Stamp as a go to knife tester :p

I'm preparing for a move as well, not looking forward to all the work, but hey, if you can get some real knife use in.... :D

Get a chance to give a Marble's blade a workout?

Glad to have you back Buzz, your comments have definately been missed! Great reviews, too.

As for the fishing, must be something going around: Want to fish, no time to fish...:(

Thanks for the greeting everybody. It’s good to be back.

Unfortunately, the Marbles knives got no workout with the new house. For convex grind testing, I pretty much stuck with my Dozier K-1. I really wanted to get in some quality time with my new Dozier. I got is just a winter was setting in last fall, so my initial testing was quite short. The summer time, and especially my upcoming vacation, will give me some time to really play with it. I plan on carrying only my Dozier K-1 and a SAK for my week in the Adirondacks.

I like the small CRKT Point Guard. I carried it for months. No, the AUS6 wasn’t exactly a powerhouse, but it was easy to sharpen. At the time, ease of sharpening mattered more to me than anything. The only problem I had was with rust. You have to keep a careful eye on bead blast finishes. My small Point Guard is ten times the knife that my small KFF is.

The 710 performed admirably. I just liked the Military better. The Military held an edge longer, and I found the handle to be much more comfortable for constant hard use. You can get a lot of leverage on that monster handle, without sacrificing control. I’m also a big fan of the Spydie hole. A lot of this falls into the category of personal preference though. I could easily see somebody preferring the 710. I’m just a Spydie fan through and through. The more I use Spydies, the more appreciation I have for the tiny, almost insignificant, little nuances that Sal puts into his designs. You don’t notice them at first, but they eventually shine through. The Military is an utterly complete design in terms of functionality, which I’ve never encountered in any other folder. I usually use a folder for a while, and end up finding things I don’t like about it. The more I use the Military, the more I grow to love and depend on it.

Hehehehe. SOSAK. That’s a deal with the other knife forum. Hit the SOSAK web page and follow the forum link. If you join the other forum, there’s a spot to join SOSAK. It’s not hard to find. To tell you the truth, I haven’t even had time to look in on SOSAK for months, much less work on the website.

As for my favorite model SAK….. That’s another matter of personal preference. I personally prefer the Cybertool34 for urban use. The screwdriver attachments alone are worth carrying one. Add on the Killian’s Irish Red bottle opener, a couple of knife blades, and a host of other goodies, and you have an awesome tool for small jobs. For outdoor use, I love my very first SAK, the Huntsman. I’ve tried others, but always go back to the Huntsman. Maybe I’m getting old and set in my ways…..

Welcome back!

It was strange to read that you, the guy who popularized convex grinds amongst newbies like me, were better suited by hollow grinds in your endeavors. One more thing that's no longer black and white to me...

Wow, well, enjoy your new home and thanks for coming back to the forums.

Hi Buzz, glad to see you back. On your discussion of the 440V, I have a custom/handmade folder, hollow grind, out of 440V that is supposed to be around 61RC and I agree with you on the edge retention of this steel. It is a great cutter/slicer, but not the best on polishing down to a razor type edge. Works better with what I call a "workning edge". A little more toothy than the polished edge. There is one stainless blade that I have found that will keep up with my 440V. That is a folder that I have that is S30V/59.5-60RC.
S30V, when heat treated and tempered by Paul Bos takes and holds a great edge.

That's not a fair comparison!!! Paul Bos could heat treat Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil to hold a great edge. Hehehehe......

And knifenerd - It's okay to covet thy neighbor's knife. :p

Damn. I'm on a roll tonight!!!!

Thanks for quick reply.

In fact, i handled and tried the small Point Guard at a shop (with inflated price, around 200US$ ) before i decided to order the large one from 1sks.

Now i am thinking, since you like Dozier so much, isn't this one a better buy?

as usual, i enjoy your review .. and one day might get the military .......:p
