I got a knock on my door at 9:45 this morning. There was a long, skinny and heavy package waiting for me. I couldn't get the damn thing open fast enough and Yangdu packed it so tough you'd need a khukri to get into it! (heh heh!) The first blade I pulled out was the Jungle Knife.
the very first thing that hit me, moreso than anything else, was the uniqueness and overwhelming sense of genuineness. Wrapping my fingers around the handle I knew this thing would become my favorite large blade. The handle has a gentle forward sweep towards the butt offering super chopping leverage, and it fits my hand PERFECTLY. The hand checkered grip was very secure in the hand. The blade wasn't as wide as I expected, but the spine was thicker (about 3/8ths inch) giving it that solid heft I was looking for. The grind was expertly applied, and obviously minor imperfections that betray a hand ground knife.
In my opinion, it just adds to that rugged look and authenticity. It's not quite as sharp as I wanted, but that's OK-An hour tonight with a softstone and it will be shaving sharp. It won't need anything as much as reprofiling, just the finishing touch. I'm impressed with the angle of the grind and the taper of the blade from that 3/8ths inch spine. I can forsee this thing being a slicer even with the thick spine and light blade width.
Next came the WWII, beautifully executed satisal handle and plenty big for a full, secure chopping grip. The spine is HUGE!! Well over half an inch, yet the blade is still very fast and responsive in the hand. Again, tapered from an extremely thick spine down to a very practical convexed edge. The water buffalo hide sheath is different than what I'm used to but very effective, and the little karda and steel are a nice touch. This package could easily be considered an ideal two blade survival setup. The karda is small and a great slicer with a practical point, and a nice thick spine. Great bird and trout style knife for skinning and food prep, etc. The satin finish is simply amazing, as are the maker's marks. I love the seam on the sheath-I have no idea how it's applied but it's bombproof! This thing is not coming from together any time soon. There are many khukris, but this one is mine.
