Hello guys I'm a friend of somenewguy for any of you that know him. For a while now I've liked knives but i have only had like flea market stuff and Walmart stuff. The only knife i have with a brand is a kershaw crown. I got into liking knives when i was about 12 and im not 20. My friend somenewguy has some cool stuff and i asked him for help and he directed me to here. Says that you guys will be able to help a newbie better then he could seeing that he doesn't have that much knowledge and he is also on vacation for about another week.

I cant say that i really have a budget, i have enough that i can get something if i want it within reason. i cant go toss out 500$ or anything like that but I'm pretty sure i can afford something decent.
Where would you guys start me off at? I pretty much always have a knife in my pocket unless I'm going into a government building school or am sleeping. I use it for the occasional cutting up my lunch if i forget to put my steak knife in my lunchbox or when the dish washer is full and i need a blade now. I also use it at work for cutting the tape off of boxes and slicing some zip ties here and there. I also use it to cut twine frequently. I wouldn't say that I'm hard on my knife but I'm definitely a very frequent user of it.

I also carry a Stanley utility knife with me too when its something i feel like my knife isn't suited for. I would say i have fairly large hands and my kershaw crown just feels kind of small in them. What would you guys suggest i buy? Also where would you suggest i buy it for the best shipping speed and prices. I don't want to get ripped off or anything.

Also I don't know if this changes anything or not but i work around people a lot and i don't want to intimidate them with the knife i use, most of them are understanding seeing that the environment i work in but i always ease it open when they are around i feel like if it just shot out it might be a tad intimidating.

I don't know much and i haven't really ever used a good quality expensive blade so I'm kind of looking for just a solid using knife. I also have a ceramic bench stone that says spyderco on the box that somenewguy gave to me to practice sharpening and i can get the knife almost sharp enough to shave with. I try to keep up with it but i feel like i do a pretty good job especially for only doing it for a couple weeks.

Thanks a lot in advanced guys i appreciate it.

Welcome! For a good user, I highly recommend a Benchmade Griptilian or Mini Griptilian. I have a bunch of more expensive knives, but I still carry my mini griptilian more often than anything else.

Thanks! just to add a bit more insight. I don't really care too much about how fancy it is or anything as long as its quality long lasting and comfortable to use. For something that will last me a long time i wont mind paying the price but i also dont want to get any of those like super hard to sharpen steels. Im just a beginner at sharpening.

Sounds like your in the market for a modern folder. If you like your kershaw then check kershawguy.com. When it comes to modern folders my knowledge is limited, however, of the ones I have checked out I end up liking the benchmades, or more accurately, their axis lock. I think it would be easier to give some suggestions if you would narrow down your specs. Anything helps - overall blade length, handle material preferences if any..... Sounds like you don't need an auto.

Alright lets see. No bigger then a 4 inch blade and having a handle that wont mess up my pants. at work i may do some of the manual work but i also still dress nicely. Does that help any?

Welcome to the forums. I would suggest the Griptilian as well, you have lot of options that you can get in and Benchmade's customer service is absolutely great.

from what i see there is 3 blade shapes available. what would be best for my uses? Tanto drop point of sheepsfoot?

I find the drop point most versatile. Tantos, even reverse tantos, are done to aid tip penetration or stabbing. Sheepsfoot are primarily slicing blades. Drop points give a little of both.

I'd recommend the Kershaw Lahar. Phenomenal fit and finish. It's beaten many of my $200 knives F&F wise. VG10 is an awesome steel, very comfortable. The only problem I see is that it may mess up your pockets. But that could be fixed by either A) bending out the clip, to relieve some tesion. Or B) take off the clip and sand down the part of the G10 that comes into contact with the clip, to smoothen out the texture.

Also, this being a user, I would check the exchange for something used, till you find exactly what you want. Unless you are fortunate enough to have a shop where you can handle them first. Then, once you've found what your looking for, you can buy a new one if you want.
A word of warning... Just by showing up here you have entered very scary territory. There are so many options, configurations,LE's, sprint runs.... Watch your wallet. None of us are here because we want to be anymore. Just.... can't............leave......

looking around i have found some stuff new on amazon. Is amazon a okay place to buy from or no?

The negatives come in when buying third party through amazon. I have never heard of anyone having a return problem direct from amazon. Neither amazon nor a lot of the businesses they get stock from, are knife dealers. They are going to just grab a box and mail it. 99% of the time, considering the brands you are looking at, no problems.
