I have a little fire extinguisher, the mini kinds that are about 5 inches wide and 14 inches long. I'm thinking about starting knifemaking. If I lines it with an inch of kaowool and satanite, would i get up to nice heat treating temps with a jth 7? what about an ordinary plumber's propane torch? what if It was 2 inches of kaowool? with that fancy itc-100? i don't need to get to forging temps, just heat treating ones. would it be too much to ask for if i thought it could heat up say, maximum, a quarter inch by 2 by 9 inch bar? what's the maximum a mini forge can heat up to?

Picklepie first off fill in all your identity on the right . You might have a neighbour with a forge and you can have a mentor give you a hand. I sure wish I had one around here but nope no such luck .Go to indian georges site and look at his set up he has a full tutorial on forges and his is pretty darn good. You can make a mini forge and there are site to show you how . type in mini forge I know of one site just cant remember where. You can forge and heat treat from them but the bigger the better , to a certain extent. Kellyw

That's going to be pretty small in diameter if you're looking for 2" of kaowool. Line that all around with 1/4" of satanite or ITC 100, and you'lve left yourself about 1/2" of center open space :D. One inch of kaowool coated with a refractory will leave you about 2-1/2" inside diameter which may be managable. I've used the JTH-7 torch in a one brick forge, and I was able to get to 1500+ for heat treating. Better insulation like in a lined forge will probably be even better.

I live in new york, and I'm pretty sure that all my neighbors are lawyers and they're more interested in tending to their porsches. Not much help there. I could ask the spudgun guy for some extra MAPP gas, but that's about it.

I think fire extinguishers are aluminum...? If so, it is probably a bad idea.

You might want to build a little fire-brick forge. You'll get the temperatures you need, but it will be an un-even heat.

I have just finished building a mini forge that gets hot enough to weld but it needs a LPG burner.
