:D Just like it says. I was poking through used magazines in my favorite bookstore and bought a few... one was a Guns & Ammo special called "Exclusive Buyer's Guide to Combat Knives" from the week of Sept. 21, 1998.

Teaser on front: Killer Kukuris

Table of contents: Killer Kukuris: An American-Nepali company imports fine utility/combat weapons. Page 57. By Leroy Thompson.

Starts with a historical perspective... few B&W photos of a kami, and a male/female sarki team. Also a shot of Merrill's Marauders with khuks... then the author gets chopping with an HI AK.

"Considering the quality of the blades, it amazes me how reasonable they are," Thompson writes. "Moreover they're among the best blades I've ever used."

I'll make scans of the article tomorrow for posting, if there's interest.

Hi Ad Astra, is this the article with a photo of 19th century painting of 2 soldiers from Garhwal Rifles carrying khukuri? If so, then this is probably the article that first introduced me to HI. I'm really bummed I lost this magazine in a move, would LOVE to see the article again!

OK, taking it to work today. :p

Just didn't know if this one was "old hat" to some of the HI lore-masters around here.

Later!

Yes. "The kukri is the traditional weapon of the Gurkha soldiers, such as these members of the 39th Garhwal Rifles."

I have been lazy about posting stuff here. Last year when we went to London's Imperial War Museum, I got some khukuri pix and always meant to post them here... If I get to be unemployed in a couple weeks, I'll find the time, finally.

We ought to make this a donation to HI, so that it can be put up under the "history' section of the site.

OK, here we go...

Mike?

You are a wonderful person. Thank you for finding and taking the time to post this article.

Best Wishes

From you, Kis, that does mean a lot. ;) Thanks.

Wish the author'd referred to Uncle Bill. Obviously he spoke with him.

Thanks for the effort and the great post. I love those old magazine articles about the magical khukuri.:D
I still have a bunch of old knife magazines that I keep. Some of them have the old HI adds from the pre internet buisness days.
Cool flashbacks.
Thanks again Mike!

He did mention Bill, actually, on page 58; he just called him, "Bill Martino." Indirectly, he also mentions Yangdu. It was Kami Sherpa that he forgot!

Nice introdcutory article on the khukuri, I think, but the phrase, "American-Nepali" is kind of awkward. Shouldn't we call such an enterprise, "Gurkho-American?"
