HI Kukri for a neanderthal

My ASTKs seem stronger than my CAKs but since not many people have ASTKs more will recommend the CAK which of course is excellent as well.

Wow I love this stuff! History, pictures. Been there done that and I get to read about it.

I am the neanderthal in question and would like your collective opinion on a HI kukri that I can't break:D . It may see a little outdoor use now and again but given the attitude to knives in the UK it will be very rare. It will mainly be for zombies, the end of the world, attack by vampires. Etc. ;).

I would go for a Gelbu Special in the 18"-20" range. Or a solid two-handed HI sword like the Tarwar. (There's a picture of one of those in a recent posting here.) The thing about zombies is that they're only a real threat in large numbers, and you can get tired swinging a heavy AK. It might decapitate the first dozen or so zombies with ease, but what about the fifty behind them when you can't lift the blade any more? Even if you're as strong as a neanderthal the extra weight becomes a handicap at some point. (Check out The Walking Dead. Michonne finished off 23 zombies in a couple of minutes with a katana in a recent episode. That's a lightweight blade compared with a GS.)

I don't think you're likely to break a GS with "a little outdoor use now and again" or even a lot of outdoor use unless it is heavy chopping. The Gelbu Special is a good all around khukuri and a lot more sword-like than an AK. The AK is more like an axe.

Jens, No picture of the ASTK? come on. Share please...have never seen a picture of an Amar Singh Thapa (Knife)

Here's a link to a recent ASTK posting by Yangdu, with photos. The ASTK has more of a bend than an AK. The ASTK has a wide, shallow fuller on each side, rather than the AK's deep fuller at the spine. It's warranteed for field use, which puts it in the same category as other HI heavy choppers, but I see it as a more all-around blade than an AK. Someone commented once that an ASTK is like a Gelbu Special on steroids.

The ASTK has an interesting history, as it is named after General Amir Singh Thapa, who led the Nepalese army against the British back in the early 1800s. I believe there are pictures of the General carrying a khukuri of a similar design.

i was gonna suggest the HI talwar too, dunno about it being indestructible, but i would choose mine as a zombie chopper..
right length and weight for a serious brain destroyer :)

Thank you Davidf99. I have to say that Bhairav are not usually my cup of tea but that one is one of the most outstanding I have ever seen. Then I scrolled down and wow ASTK is also something too. Having very little experience with the various Kuhkuri I love seeing all of them. I like the looks of the wider shallower fullers better for some reason. another beautiful choice for me to consider as I patiently wait for my "The" blade to speak to me.

I also agree if I was faced with a serious Zombie horde my first choice for a chopper would be my Katana, much as I love the Kuhkuri for so many tasks including fighting, a longer blade that can be swung 2 handed and would also be easier to get back out of the bone you just buried it into would be better in my opinion for some mindless zombie trying to eat your brains. Remember their bites are diseased, you want to kill them as far away from them as possible :hororr:

There's a huge variation in weight for some of the tarwars. I have an older one by Young Sher that weighs 41 oz. That's not too heavy for a two-handed blade. An AK of that weight would be much harder to handle. I recently acquired another tarwar, by Lokendra kami, that's the same 29" length but weighs in at a whopping 59 oz. It has a chiruwa-style handle. The spine is a full 3/8" thick and that thickness extends from the pommel almost all the way to the point. It would be safe to call this blade indestructible.

Now that I think of it, the 59 oz tarwar was originally somebody's special order, so the 41 oz weight is probably more typical of tarwars. I enjoy holding it, but with that much weight, you'd better hit your target on the first swing!

i think my talwar is probably about the 40 ounces, its heavier than any other blade i own, but when wielded with 2 hands it is pretty lively
i wish i could really cut and smash some stuff with it, but being made by Bura i have just kinda left is alone lately..mine is not very sharp but the blade thickness is massive almost to the tip of the blade..i wold expect the grip to fail before the blade ever did..

Lot of lucky folks with Bura popping up lately.

I see shavru with a Foxy Folly myself. The fullers, the depth, the light weight by comparison. You'd dig it.

It and my Trisuli Ghaule rank pretty high on my favorites list.

I agree, the fullers on the Foxy Folly as well as the Dui Chirra are just amazing.

the bahadur special is probably the most zombie killing knife ive ever seen, I sadly missed those

My hands down favorite khuks are my Sgt Khadka bonecutter and my ASTK. If push came to shove, the ASTK probably winds out because of its lighter weight, higher utility and equal durability. I've also modified the handles on both to fit my hands better. I'll post pics later. Cheers!

Nawww. Aint partin with that one yet but if you want Zombie killer then Giant Chitlangi Bowie is it! If you want a skull splittin trail monster then maybe a 20" AK long as you dont have to carry it too many miles. They are 3# plus. or 22" ganga Ram special.

Those 25" chitlangis are very beautiful to me! I love them long fullers! I have only heard of two of them before and Bawanna here owns one:thumbup:
roger that

Psss, we're not allowed to talk about or compare notes on that stuff. I'd stick a couple paper plates down the back of your pants. Your gonna get a spanking. I'm sorry. Well not really I'd like to watch but I would like to compare notes so we don't bid against each other. Now I'm probably in trouble too, aiding and abetting. I'm gonna go find me some paper plates too.
