HI Medieval longsword/bastard sword?

Well, a proper longsword or bastard is around 3 pounds with a POB of 3-4 inches from the guard. Length could be anywhere from 40 to 46 inches.

If you haven't handled a few, I would recommend doing so before ordering a custom sword. That way you can be sure your beautiful dream sword handles the way you want it to. I've known a couple guys who ordered custom swords that fit the dimensions they thought they wanted and then getting them were disappointed in the actual handling characteristics.

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't think of that. About the sword, I don't exactly have any dimensions to give, only ideas of how I want the sword to look, like the shape of the guard, pommel etc and some pictures, so I will have to trust the skilled kami to get it right.

I might get an oppurtunity to handle some swords this monday when I'm going to Stockholm for a day, there's a store there somewhere that sells swords and other medieval weapons.

If you want the sword to look a certain way and come in at a certain weight, it is best to provide clear and succinct parameters and instructions as to what you want to have in your hand in the end.
Otherwise it like walking into a confectionery shop for a wedding cake and just telling them "make me a cake".....

Another thing to pay attention to is distal taper. The thickness of the blade should thin as you approach the tip--this helps keep the point of balance from being too far out there.

Wow... there are alot of things to think of. I who have never handled any swords except for a wajaski sword, will have a very hard time giving any specific dimensions on a bastard sword, since I've never held one.

Looking at my measuring tape, a bastard sword at about 40-42" overall length, excluding the pommel, and having a 10" handle would suit me best. I might actually be able to make a wooden model of it, but it will be alot of work for just a model wich will probably look pretty horrible since my woodworking skills are almost nonexistent.

yeah, i know you can do that, but I still think just saying "make me a 40 inch blade with two edges and a point on a two handed grip and a thick guard"
and they will be able to make one that is the right balance just from experience ( they are turning out more long swords every year)

You made me realize just how simple it can be, thanks. But I'm very picky and want it to look a certain way, but if needed I can trust the kami, they definitely know what they are doing.

Gehazi:

You mentioned earlier in this thread that you've "always wanted an oversized executioners sword in the old english mayor style." If that's what you want now you can probably find exact specs for such a sword from internet searches or asking advice on sword forums. That would be length, shape, thickness, weight, probably even some pictures of museum pieces.

The thing to keep in mind that an executioners sword might not be good for anything else. An old-time execution involved lifting a heavy sword or axe overhead and bringing it down in one swing, probably by a big guy who's been trained to do executions. A sword or axe designed for that purpose might be completely wrong for combat, wood cutting or anything besides beheadings.

Nothing at all wrong with the kind of blade you want, but the more specific you are, the more likely that the kamis will fulfill your vision. With the description you give above, you might just get an oversized Tibetan Sword with a double edge. Not really an executioner's sword, but you might really like it.

thats the thing, im certain ill like anything I get, because they shape good steel ;
if you ever saw baron munchausen movie , the sultans executioner, I think you should have to hire a giant fat muscle guy to carry the sword around if you are going to call it an executioners sword.

I sent pix and details to our shop and Kamis. I will contact you once I hear from shop manager and our talented Kami Rajkumar.
Warm welcome to the HI and Forum!

On the smaller sword side I have a H.I. Hauser, a German household short sword.
It is WONDERFUL!!! I did a review of it some time back, great hunk of sharp steel.

Wow! that sword is cool! I especially like the guard it has!

Thanks for sharing Dino!

Some folks think it looks real heavy or clumsy, and it is not. It needs mass to work, but it is fast and should be in a case labled "In Case of Zombies, Break Glass".
Folks, email Yangdo and order one if you like the idea of having a wonderful shortsword with a German accent.
