HI New Designs Mountain Bowie

i like it. scabbard too. maybe a couple of braided rattan rings around it...

a leather EDC sheath would do too, tho knives tend to store better in wood or kydex.

Very Nice!!!
I can see these becoming very popular here.
I hope we see these as a regular offering as my want list just grew by one more.

Wow, I love this new design and hope we will see it offered in the future. This and the HI Cleaver are now tops on my HI want list.:)

Hello Becker Brute clone :)

Bladite

Was my thought too or like the Kershaw OutCast
Brute-vs-Outcast.jpg

that I have though I would prefer a Brute. The Brute is 1095 high carbon & the Outcast is D2 Any idea what the HI MOUNTAIN BOWIE is made of?

I believe HI large blades are Mercedes truck leaf springs. Great stuff for knife blades.

They're all very classic bolo (not bowie) shapes. Something I happen to love a lot :> Oh yah.

I've handled an Outcast at a show... Didn't do anything for me.

Will bide my time, and see if this new HI offering comes in a pretty wood, when the sharking dies down (and I have more spending money; things have been very tight lately - might have to dig in the trunk and sell more stuff). I do like villagers. They beg to be used.

OOoooooh, this is a nice blade! Congrats Wovoka on picking this up! Could it be that HI is getting closer to producing a kitchen-style blade that I've been hoping for? If the recurve of this design could be filled in with belly for chopping against a cutting surface I think we could easily have a HI Chefs' knife. How cool would that be? If the blade thickness could be brought down a tad, even more perfect still. The handle is already perfect!

Hint, hint?

Anyways, looks like a winner to me, Wovoka, and I'd also vote for a leather sheath.

Sad for your need but excited at the goodies that will be freed from their captivity!:p ;)

You might even agree to sell one to me if I get in quickly enough? :D

With you 100% on your hopes that HI does a Chefs' Knife as per your suggestions.

Even as it is, this new design has taken the interests of many. Maybe they will be added to the HI online Sales site as a permanent item?

Dear Yangdu didi,

There is nothing Black color coated on those HI Mountain Bowies.

That is the natural color produce while under process of heat treatment/ paining process only the thing is that we have not Buff/polish those blades.

Thank you,

Rajesh

"as forged" is another phrase for it

I believe the HI Blades are made from 5160 Steel... and I would think that the fact that the steel was used as a vehicle spring prior to being used for a blade, would really tend to "Work the steel".... sort of like when You are building a High Performance motor, some of the best blocks are ones that were in service for a long time, undergoing many cycles of heating, then cooling etc.
Something to do with "stress relieving"

Here is some good info RE: Steels:
"5160 A steel popular with forgers, it is extremely popular now and a very high-end steel. It is essentially a simple spring steel with chromium added for hardenability. It has good edge holding, but is known especially for its outstanding toughness (like L-6). Often used for swords (hardened in the low 50s Rc) because of its toughness, and is also used for hard use knives (hardened up near the 60s Rc)."

The above info is from: The Knife Steel FAQ by Joe Talmadge
Drop me a line if You would like the URL.

Thank you Yangdu for your informative post as there has been speculation on the rust resistance properties of this 'new' villager finish.

Just to follow up a bit, I have what must be the 2nd mountain bowie produced. Just got it today (thanks, Yangdu).

A few early comments. I'll get some pics together a bit later as I figure I'll make a few customizations...

The blade is much more "rustic" than my other HI blades (I have 10 or so now), but this is my first "villager" grade, much less "true villager" grade knife. There are still hammer marks and other character marks on the blade itself.

The black coating is almost like a soot layer. First thing I did when I got it was chop the USPS triangular box to pieces. The coating will rub off rather easily with use. I like the look, though, and will probably end up stripping it and doing something to color/protect the blade (maybe a cold blueing or something).

It chops very nicely. But of course, everyone probably would assume that. I don't have any files for testing the hardness to determine hardness at various locations along the blade, but the "ringing" test seems to indicate that it's hardest around the belly and gradually softens near the tip and and handle. The audible difference in those locations is very noticeable.

Handle feel is exquisite. Very well balanced. It will be an excellent all around survival-type bowie knife.

The sheath is very unusual. I will probably replace the lace material with some leather strips I have here and will further smooth the sheath all around. It's good now, but I think that a finer sanding will make it pop. I personally like the all wood look--it's a nice change. I may end up with some form of protective coating or a light staining. I'm not sure yet. The blade fit is nice and tight.

Overall, this knife is a nice addition to the HI line. I think it's going to prove to be a real winner.

Now if I could just convince HI to make a line of jian, everything would be right with the world :)

Many thanks for your first impressions and findings.

I like your description of 'villager' versus 'true villager' too.

Looking forward to the photo's.

I am convinced that our posts are read and often reacted upon...never stop hoping about what new product HI will make next.:D

I am in the process of staining MB#1 wooden sheath. Will post pics when finished. I really like the feel of this knife. The handle is a perfect fit for my hand.
