HI pix used on another store's site

watermarking an image takes less than ten seconds with any decent picture software, such as Paint Shop Pro, or the more infamous Photoshop. I've done that sort of thing before.

Yangdu, I could make up a set of watermarked images for the website if you like. Just let me know what you would want on them. Here is a really simple example:

I can see the water mark just fine.

Andy

Kazeryu - could you go ahead and do that?

I think it's a great idea.

If you don't mind wading through the pictures on the website, saving them, and then bulk-emailing them to:

dkoster AT gmail DOT com

with the same filenames, then I will upload them (I keep a running backup of the website already, so replacing them all at once is not a problem - like I said, just use the same filenames and make sure they are "Saved-for-the-Web" a la Photoshop)

Let me know if you're willing to do this. Your watermark image is great - keep it like that.

Being the good forumites that we are and since we are always more than willing to go the extra mile and give a guy the benefit of the doubt....

perhaps the dude (or dudess) running the site merely intended to advertise HI products and if they sold any (no sale prices were mentioned) they intended to buy from Auntie Yangdu and resell at a markup to the customer. :)

Hows that for being kind hearted.

Thank you very much.

and, by the way, pigs really can fly.

Sure thing. I'll start working on it when I get some time off from my other projects. I'll be in contact with you, Daniel.

The watermark looks great. I would recommend some sort of watermark also across the center of the photo, since it would be easy to crop the photo you gave as your example. I've seen semi transparent watermarked photos that look really good, and most importantly, would thwart any attempt for unethical people to use them as their own.

re R-Click
still can easily get the info from the html text

Watermark is a great idea
only a watermark that ghosts over
a significant part of the image will be of much use
---it can't be easily removed

a corner image will get cropped/covered
& a usable image remains

here's an example of what I call a 'ghost' watermark:

Nice work guys! Thanks Kazeryu for suggesting this and Dean for the variable idea. This would help stop this kind of blatant theft for sure.

They even had a pic of that (what was it called? Katar I think), that Dave K has one of. Now how common is _that_ item? Weren't there like just 3 of them made?

I got to play with Dave's at Gins house at the SWKK, and it was a blast. That's the first time I heard the term (from Nasty) "Zombie Killer" to describe one of HI's creations. :D

Thanks again,

Norm

ddean - you have raised a good point, and one I intended to discuss before I went ahead on the work.

A corner watermark can indeed be cropped out, or if the person is skilled enough, editted out. BUT - With proper sizing and placement (eg, so that just cutting the watermark out will remove part of the object being pictured) a corner watermark acts as an excellent deterrant without obscuring the item in the photo.

A full blown ghost watermark is (in my opinion) quite obnoxious, and detracts from the impact of the image. It sort of punishes people who are legitimately browsing the HI site. The advantage is that it is so incredibly difficult to remove one that it's just not worth the effort -- more security!

I personally was thinking of doing just a slightly larger logo khuk with a nicer-looking font, as a corner watermark. Obviously, the final choice is up to whoever is in charge of the site. (Daniel Koster?)

I will make up a couple more sample watermarked images when I get home, and post them in a new thread.

A note to MauiRob and anyone else having trouble seeing my images - I am posting images via ImageShack... you probably have images set to load only for the originating website. If you allow off-site images, I think you will be all set to go.

I agree that a full blown ghost watermark is obnoxious... I HATE them...
Why not use invisible watermarks, the cannot be removed, because they are contained in every part of the image, but they are invisible to the eye... You have legal protection, but no anoyance...
Unless the idea is to STOP people from using the image, and not just be able to prove that they are wrongly using the image...

legal protection isn't the problem - there's no way to actually sue these no-name scam sites hosted all over the world, and it's not worth the effort. Deterrance is the better option.

Thanks:thumbup: I can't see it at work but I had no trouble here.

I second the ghost watermark idea--that is if Yangdu even wants to do this.

Some watermarks overlaying the picture
-are- very obnoxious
Others are easy for -me- to ignore

I think with a little attention to the exact position,
density & color of the 'ghost'
a good compromise can be had

email sent to Yangdu. fingers crossed....

Dean is right...I used to do some of this and ghost across is the most effective application of a watermark.

Also correct on the issue of capturing images. If it renders in the browser, there is a copy available.

I like the ghost watermarks as well if they are discreet, and think all the suggestions on how to do them are excellent, but if Kazeryu is offering to do the work I think we should let him do it the way he wants, considering that we had nothing before. (No offense intended or meant to hinder the alternate ideas we have all offered.)

Anyway, I am not averse to doing it any way you guys think, especially as it is not my web site! (-: but just wanted to acknowlege who has offered to do the heavy lifting.

Just my .02¢ worth.

Thanks!

Norm

No sweat GI.
