Hi Point handguns?

I have the carbine, and have had it for YEARS and threw thousands of rounds downrange. They work, they have really good customer service.

Other choices to consider would be the makarov (and all the variants, most can be had for around 200 dollars) Plus if you look around you can get the police trade in handguns for a really good price. (I have been looking at one of the S&W .38 revolvers for around 250) Just keep looking, you can find a good deal.

There are a lot of really good police trade ins that are worth considering in a similar price range. If you are already committed to purchasing the Hi Point, why are you asking the question? If all you want is self reinforcing positive comments about this substandard pistol, a knife forum is probably a better place to ask then a gun forum.

I agree with the first part of your post but I am not sure what you mean by the quoted portion? Knife people prefer substandard guns? I think you will find a very high percentage of people responding to this thread are the members of those gun forums.

No personal experience, but from what i've read/heard their warranty is pretty great. Lifetime, and the their CS is pretty good as well.

Hello, the .380 acp is too small, clothes can stop those things. If it is for home defense, you could end up shooting through a door, wall, who knows. I personally wont go smaller than a .40 cal. but the 9mm will do fine. Ammo prices shouldnt be too much of an issue, I dont think you will ever shoot a 100 rounds for defense, but do practice a few times with it.

As for which gun to get, hi points shoots but this is your wife and your life on the line. Sig and Glock go through torture tests, 100 hour salt water wash, all kinds of things. Those guns are tanks, especially the Sig, a gun above and beyond is ideal.

Spend the money once and have a gun that is worthy

IMO Hi points are crap. Save a little more and get a Glock. Especially if you are only gonna get 1 gun. Get something nice that fits you and that is reliable.

As a ffl dealer, I'll make it simple for you. Hi points are POS, and I refuse to sell them. As an LEO as well, I am happy that it's a gun frequented by criminals. The bare bottom that you should be looking at would be a keltec or Taurus. Not a hater, you are more than welcome to bring that to a gun fight. I just prefer to trust my life to higher quality weapon.

These are the types of comments I was expecting... I've been lurking on calguns and comments about hi points have been very balanced and quite positive actually. I don't know a lot about guns. I know my needs and I know my budget.

I was hoping people would come out with suggestions for other guns which would have a decent used price which I'd look out for at the local dealers. Thanks to those who have. I also asked hoping to find those bad experiences with the gun or CS, but there doesn't seem to be anthing other than its a cheap and ugly one.

I don't think you have been reading the posts here, Just read XxDRPxX's Post again please!

Please explain to me why a gun that is inexpensive goes bang every time you pull the trigger or the company that made it will fix it As accurate as guns costing many times as much is a "POS" I have shot at least 50 different hi-points and as I said in an earlier post I have seen one with problems and they fixed it and sent the kid a hand full of mags for his trouble and don't give me how long the will last excuse either. when I got rid of my 9mm's I gave a friend my 9mm brass a 5 gallon bucket full all shot through a hi-point C9 and carbine and I only find about half the brass shot. I will give you they are butt ugly and heavy.
And while I'm on the soap box ;) I get tired of the "save up for " stuff there are lots of people that is not an option a lot of young families there is never enough cash and if you get some extra cash and don't use it now something will come up that you will have to use that money. That is just life If you are lucky enough to never be in that boat count your blessing, but realise many people work their ass off just to get to the next pay day
My experiance with all handguns mentioned in this thread the taurus autos are the ones we should hope the bad guys liked it usually take 2 or 3 trips back to the factory to get them to be some what reliable Love my taurus 94 revolver though:D

Roy,

People bring me guns to be repaired, or they want to sell them, I also have a second hand dealer license. Hi points brought into my shop over the last 20 years have all been broken , or have had enough mechanical malfuntions to deem them worth less. I love how everyone wants to talk about the warranty. It's weird cause out of 300 personal firearms I've never had to send a gun in for warranty work. I've noticed guns get and occasional misfeed

But I can replace the spring on my own and don't have to send it in. Your experience with hi point is the exception, and not the rule. Taurus has really upped their quality control over the last three years. Personally I won't own a Taurus auto, but a judge any day. Keltec is actually an aero space corporation who specialized in space age plastics. Their guns appear cheap, and feel flimsy, but I have never had one returned to me. So the decision is yours, if hi points were so great, at the price point everyone would own one.

We agree on the keltecs and taurus autos Hi points in my opinion are good for their price point and head and shoulder over the "cheap guns" made in the past . I now have moved on to Springfield XD's because I can afford better. I know I have killed hundreds of groundhogs with a 995 carbine. most of the hi-point I have seen and shot were bought by young people mainly for plinking and target practice. out here in the midwest there are still folks that think shooting pop cans and clay birds stuck in the fence is harmless fun :D only gun I ever sent back was a taurus auto and I have seen several that had to go back . If I'm in the woods I usually have a taurus model 94 stainless 2" barreled 22 on my belt. It shoots minute of squirrel @ 50 feet;)

Around here most people that shoot do have one laying around.

I just get frustated with people who always answer save up for some thing better. I can remember the times 25 years ago with a wife and young children making just a little above minimum wage that just wasn't an option . Every time money was put back something came up and it was needed. I had an old H&R 12 gauge single and my grandmothers 22 single shot to hunt with and thought I was in high cotton when I was able to do some work for an Enfield and 3 boxes of ammo

You said it! Shooting isn't always about 'business' (at least it shouldn't be). It's another way of having fun, like backyard baseball or pitching horseshoes.

Me too! I don't know how many hours I spent at the kitchen table, pounding 45 cases into and out of a Lee Loader because I couldn't afford to buy all the ammo I wanted to shoot. My son is in his 40's now and his wife called me for advice on a reloading set up for him as a Christmas present. He had told her stories about those early years and she wanted their sons to have the same experience with him.

My comments in bold.

For me firearms are primarily tools. Just like my knives. I want only the highest quality, I cannot afford for my knife to snap when batoning a tree for shelter, just like I can't afford my hand gun to misfire, or jam in a gun battle. As rare as those two circumstances may be for some, they are very real scenarios I could face daily. If you are buying a hi point solely for sport, why not. But when I heard "self defense", you might as well bring a lead hammer in my OPINION. Now your XD, love them, completely on par with glocks, and you get a little more for your money.

Home defense = shotgun

I'd buy a Hi Point, but only for plinking; I have thought about it more than once. Not saying they are good or bad but if I had to defend myself or my family, I would pick something different...

shotty for home defense. pass on the hi point and keltecs. i have had both and hated both. again if you are a 1 gun guy why not get a quality gun that will last you 3 lifetimes?? sigs, glocks, SW's, etc etc.
