HI Spear Head/Knife Interest Thread

Alright, if we're to be specific, here's what i'd favor:

A) First choice, for the sake of historical interest, would be some kind of a native, Nepali spear. This would be the most respectful choice, and the one most familiar to the kamis.

B) Second choice, and the one that I originally intended to suggest, is simple the smatchet blade, but with socket-style mounts, like those beautiful pictures on page 2 of this thread. Lugs, only if they can do it; otherwise, I'll improvise. (In other words, much like Steely suggested yesterday.)

I don't see a whole lot of need for a hollow-handled knife, myself, since a khukuri sheath supposedly has a "tinder pouch": as long as it's big enough to hold, say, on of those "tobacco-tin" British Army survival kits, I'd say you're covered.

Some more I've come up with/tinkered with the design.

*edit*

I thought of two things.....

1-for Steely:the pole that's most common for a spear is a tapered 1 1/4 pole
2-you'know if you put the holes for the pin/cord at the front and made them big enough, you could just make it long enough to act like lugs :D

I love this design:

I'd buy two!

I'm with you:thumbup: It reminds me of a Manjushree blade mated to a socket. Simple, effective, and would be a good gauge as to what the kamis can do with the design...just my humble opinion.

I really like the design Krull drew in post 22.

There are a two major design goals (if I understand correctly) we have out of this project.

1) To make a solid, useable spear;
2) To keep the cost low enough that most forum members can buy one.

Now, the way to do that is to ask for a product that close in many ways to designs the kamis already make well. A single-edged design will still penetrate plenty, and will be less expensive and easier to keep strong.

Both long and short spears are primarily intended for thrusting. I believe we are more likely to have a satisfactory result for the most people- both makers and users- if we ask for a simpler product initially. Scaling up seems to usually be easier for the kamis than scaling down. :D

Now, it'd be cool to have a survival knife. I guess. My main goal is to get a good spear, and the truth is, I'll likely spend about $100 or so getting the shaft (canvas micarta rod) to mount it on. Having the spearhead mounted is likely to run me close to the same amount.

I'm okay with that, especially if we can start with, say, a $70 spearhead, instead of a $170 one. At some point, if we demand for too much, it'd be easier to just get a Cold Steel boar spear, and call it a day.

So where are we on this one, guys? Do we need to set up a poll or something to get a majority vote.

Also, in case your favorite design isn't the one that ends up being produced first, never fear:) The kamis rarely get it 100% the first time through. Lots of idea and language barriers to overcome. A desirable and functional proof of concept kept simple might be the best first course of action. The kamis tend to embellish upon the design as time goes on.

So I guess it comes down to a few points:

Single edge or double edge
Spearhead that can double as a knife or a dedicated spearhead (that might be used as a knife in a pinch)
Overall length
Finish (satin, polished, black scale)

Maybe price point? I know Yangdu really can't give us an idea of cost until the kamis get the plan and figure up man hours, material, R&D, etc. However, keeping it simple might keep the price down for folks who are feeling the economic pinch...just a thought.

I'm cool with either single or double edged, but if you twisted my arm (and didn't inflate the cost too much) I would like a double edge.

I would like a dedicated spearhead with a shaft long enough grip as a knife in a pinch.

Scale left on finish.

:thumbup:Exactly.

Well I have gotten word from Yangdu that the Bushman did in fact reach Reno, and she is going to send it to the kamis for inspiration. I'm hoping that once they get a socketed product in hand, maybe we can find out the likelihood that they can replicate a spearhead in a unique, useful, and economic manner:)

As Uncle Bill used to say, "Stay tuned".;)
