Hey there.

I've been lurking for a while now.. I thought I was into knives, but yeah.. not like you guys. My current EDC is a Leek. Had this knife for a while... replaced when lost, or the lock broke. Given the lock breaks, figured I would try a few different ones. Had one open up in my pocket once... luckily didn't get me.. I like the size and weight.

Have a havalon for cleaning hogs, some gut hooks for deer, have a fixed buck somewhere...among others. I just got a CRKT M16. Handle is too small for my liking, but will keep in my truck.

Anyway.. Looking for a knife or two.

Opinions on: Spyderco PM2 or Benchmade Bugout or Barrage? Always heard about Benchmade.. figured I should get one, but then looked at a few spydercos.

also looking at the Code 4.

I realize these are a bit different knives, but seem well built.

Appreciate the input.

I very recently started a similar thread and bought a Spyderco PM2. Only had it for a week and its already scratched and dirty from being used a EDC for a farm.

The lock is fun to play with if thats your thing too.

I say buy one

All those models you'd mentioned are classics from each of their brands, since you are checking out BM and Spyderco, I'd like to suggest to check out the followings as well:

BM Bailout (I like this better than Bugout, but still very light weight)
Spydero PM3 Lightweight (if you are into lightweight and full handle similar to PM2 but shorter blade)

Personally, I prefer the Manix 2 over the PM2 (but it's rather wide in the pocket)...and the PM2 over the PM3.
I'd like the Barrage better if it wasn't assisted - I have the 581 (aluminum bolsters, m390 steel).
Honestly, in that price range, I'd go with the Hogue Ritter (RSK MK1-G2). It's really the only one of the knives mentioned above that I carry with any frequency. (the others make it into my pocket once or twice a year, if that)

If you want to go smaller than those, there's a Hogue Ritter Mini. If you don't mind upping the budget a bit, I'm a big fan of the Southern Grind Spider Monkey.

If you don't mind a knife that requires two hands - I almost always have some version of the Buck 501 on me...my favorite being the s35vn version from DLT. I probably prefer CPM-154 (ala SK's SFO); but the burlap micarta couldn't beat out the green canvas I already had.

Thanks... Seems I am on the right track... Need to see if I can find some to hold locally.
I will check out those other options.

Is the Code 4 similar to the Leek in quality or is it a bit better?

Definitely better quality. Don’t get me wrong, the Leek is a good knife, but the Code 5 significantly out ranks it in quality.

The Code 4 is a good bit bigger than a Leek. I can't comment on quality because I dislike CS styling...but, what's the point in having a one hand opening knife that you need two hands to close? (yes, I know, it CAN be done one handed...but it is hardly convenient, or thought free for most)

So one thing I just noticed is that some of these are point up when in your pocket. Not sure I like that... Not exactly the feeling when you walk in front of a barrel, but maybe you get my feeling there..

I carried a Kershaw Leek for about 5 years. It's a good little EDC, and it's what really brought me into the modern knife world. Before the Leek, I was a Case Stockman - Buck fixed blade guy. Just like you, I wanted to try something new, and I made the mistake of buying a Spyderco Para 3. Fair warning, try one at your own risk....

My vote goes to a PM2. It was my first "good" knife, and still one of the best overall production knives around in my opinion. Just don't use the tip for prying.

Can’t go wrong with a PM2 or the Benchmade’s for that matter. Like hhmoore, I would also like to suggest the Hogue Ritter, probably gonna be my next knife.
