HI weekend

considering that I am planning to move from California to Sapporo (Hokkaido, Japan) in about a year, I figure I better start plannig early. Maybe if I put the khukuris in with my gardening shears and bonsai equipment? I could maybe even write up a nice little brochure about this newfangled gardening tool to reinforce the "gardening approach"
at any rate, it would seem safer to actually carry them on the plane than to ship them. that way you don't have to declare, and can avoid mentioning them unless they search you, which doesn't happen too often.

Tatsuo, I hope Sapporo airport is one of the rare generous in Japan. I know 15" AK reached one of may pals there successfully. Hand carrying will be safer unless you take it on board. Furnitures for moving to Japan will not take whole and minute Xray as usual parcels, still carrying seems safer to me.

As Uncle Bill experienced, carrying a khukuri on board will be dangerous even if it is a khukuri rum!

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I'll be sure to keep it in mind.
Actually, I was thinking of making a test run this winter with a trash khukuri from India. If it gets confiscated, it will save me the trouble of disposing it

Tatuo, there are some tips for your test run.
Even an Indian cheap khukuri is a part of limited resources on the earth, and it's vicious to give in to customs where no recycling is considered.
End of Dec, and early Jan fit your puropose as customs are busy with horde of people at every airport.
Customs does not xray all the baggage. They look at faces of passengers for clues of smuggling. Be sure a khukuri is legal in Japan because its true. Only there are some customs of different thought against legal basis, and only there are no way to get over them in non-democratic country. Keep innocent looking all the time, get surprised if they find the khukuri to tell you it's not legal, and ask them why calmly because you heard a khukuri is a kind of hatchet from Japanese friend. You don't have say it was a wrong_friend.
Hope your success to save resource.

Tatsuo ... Mizutani San.

Shhhhhh! ... come nearer ... I tell you something ... when Pakcik Bill send Khuk via Express Mail - I will be taxed & sometimes Custom people asked for special permit from Ministry of Internal Affairs ... but ... when Pakcik Bill send Khuk via ordinary Airmail - I can collect it without being taxed or asked to produce any special permit!
