A burl is like a tumor on a tree, it produces wild grain patterns that are generally very weak, so it has to be stabilized after it is dried.

"I'm just a wayfaring stranger, lookin' for a hickory burl..."

I'll bet 70% of the readers have no idea what we are talking about.

Stacy, unfortunately I do know what you are talking about, which dates me to about the 17th century.

Not to steal the thread back from you yahoos, but....

The guy over at Laramie Knives (http://laramieknifeworks.com/Spalted Hickory and walnut Burl DP PHOTO.htm) made a sweet one with spalted hickory and walnut.

A guy named Jerry Crowe (http://www.ruralmissouri.org/05pages/05AugTurnings.html) turned a pretty sweet bowl out of a hickory burl.
