Gathered about 500 Hickory Nuts today....498 to be exact. Looks like I'll be fabricating a nut cracker in the near future.

A lot of work but really tasty nut meat. I have a lot of shagbark hickory trees on my property.

KR, How much meat/flesh will 500 yield?
 
Smash them well and get a nut pick as they are hard to get the meat out of. Closely related to the pecan.There are shag bark hickories like mine but there are other types.

Dang fine! i remember being little and trying to open one of those up with a nut pick. I ended up opening up my palm :(
 
I've seen a lot of those hulls all over where I hike and fish these past few weeks... May have pick some .. Thanks for sharing...:thumbup:
 
Boil them or bake in the oven for about 15 min and they are MUCH easier to crack. Some even crack by themselves. My Lab eats them shell and all. Sounds like he's eating gravel!--KV

I really have no idea. I have never done anywhere near that amount. You have a termendous haul there. :thumbup: The shagbark hickory nuts on my property are pretty small, even the large ones and it is a lot of work to get them out. I have only really eaten them on the fly as it were. Never tried even doing 100 in a row.

I always thought that they reminded me of walnuts in taste though.

They are just starting to drop here so I may have to try some again.

Hey guys I love hickory nuts especially the ones off of a "Shag-Bark Hickory tree. However I will warn those of you who may live here in Missouri or it's surrounding states. We have a Hickory species here in this area of the country called "BITTERNUT HICKORy. And believe me it is called "BITTERNUT" for a reason:o

It leaves a horrible taste in your mouth very similar to that of a green persimmon :eek: It is one of the smooth bark varieties of Hickory and you find most of them deep in the timber. But there are a few of them on the outskirts of housing additions.

The Missouri Department Of Conservation website has pictures of them. Now the Bitternut wood is still good wood to barbeque with but do not try to eat one of those nuts whatever you do.

My mother used to make homemade fudge with ShagBark hickory nuts in it and the taste was very close to heaven ;)
 
Some trees throw bigger nuts than other trees.My g.f. and I found one tree that has nuts twice the size of the others right next to it.----OK, now begin with the "bigger nuts" jokes.:D
 
Hickory nuts are awesome! They have a taste all their own and they make a great pie if you have the patience. However, from a survival perspective eating them probably uses more calories than you gain. Because the shells are so thick and have such a stout cross structural support they are difficult to break open without smashing and scattering the meat and the nut inside is pretty small compared to the outer shell. It's hard to believe they are the same genus as Pecans...Pecans are soooo much easier to eat. I am fortunate in that while I do have several Hickory trees here on and around my land, mostly I am surrounded by large American Black Walnut trees that are not hard to crack and have lots of inner meat.
