Hidden Pins?

I had an idea to pin handles without the pins going all the way through the handle. So they would be hidden from view.

Anybody tried this?

Absolutely, it's a tried-and-true technique. Some makers also use regular pins or bolts that go through, but are recessed slightly and hidden by escutcheons, wire inlay or other decorative touches.

Is there any special techniques to doing this? Anything to worry about?

accidentally taking too much off the scales and revealing the pin comes to mind.

Yes, I've done this once. Screwed it up twice by drilling all the way through reflexively.
I dodged the depth problem partly by using flat scales and avoiding shaping.
But since they were 1/16" pins and 1/8" scales it was really fiddly.

I only had bits that would cut a rounded bottom to the hole, and naturally the pins were flat-head. Not much room to work with.
Here they are getting plugged together below:

I'll probably not try that again on purpose, but if your design demands it.... well you do what you gotta.

I did it on a fillet knife i made for my girlfriend and it worked quite well. Although that style of knife is more a fine work tool than a chopper. I only did it because we needed it done and i only had brass pin stock not stainless, and she was hell bent against having brass pins in her purple handle.

I was really interested in using it on bolsters. I wanted to add some wood bolsters to my knife, but didn't want the pins to show on the bolster. Anybody tried it on the bolsters?

Drill 1/2 the normal depth and use all thread as the pins material. your epoxy will make it hold even more.
