hidden tang glue-up fixture

So I haven't posted much here at all in a long while... thought I'd try to contribute.

Most of us have some sort of hoaky set up to hold a hidden tang knife together while the epoxy is curing.

I've always wanted something better, and since I have shop time at school... I made something.

I'll let the pictures explain. Worth note, everything has been milled/surface ground flat so that it's all nice and square, AND you can use this fixture to drill the pin using the drill press and KNOW the pin will be perpendicular to the handle.

Okay, that's it.... Lots of pictures... hopefully they'll help somebody out to come up with something of their own. A friend at school said I should make these and sell them. I told him what cheap bastards knife makers are.... eh hem, I mean, "industrious" and that they'd just make their own anyway. ;)

Thanks Mike! It was nice chatting with you earlier. :)

I did indeed build these heavy. The one with 316 ss bolts was the first one I finished, and those are a bit heavy, lol.

You can see the one with all cap screws slides on the main bar. I did that so that you can get the knife in place, get the swivel pad bolts close to position, then slide it apart, glue it up and then put it all back in position.

This fixture allows you to position any handle configuration I can think of, so that you apply pressure WHERE you WANT to. :)

Damn Nick, your welds are really getting good! Oh, nice fixture too... :) Very slick.

"Modeled"??? you mean like with paper mache????? ;) Sorry Michael... I just started cutting, welding, and milling until I had what I thought would work. Some engineer eh??? LMAO

These screws came from Fastenal. They had them in a sale bin because they were overstock. I thought they were 1/2-13 when I picked them up, but they're metric.... but no big deal... I just had to get the right drill/tap.

I've actually made some of these type bolts on a lathe, but the trick on these is that they have no obstruction on the one end... just the allen drive.

As long as somebody doesn't mass market these and make a bazillion dollars, I don't care if somebody makes one. ;)

Somebody is bound to do one up better than I did, I just hope you share what you did so I can copy that! :)

Damn Nick and I thought you were just another pretty face in the crowd but now I see you got brains too!:)
Seriously I really like the thing ama bobber!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice bit of tooling there, Nicky... who's knife is that being modeled? I didn't think you made knives anymore...
:D

Your welds really are looking kickass Nick. Great stuff. By the way, where the hell are you going to put THREE new machines in your shop?
